Threads older than 30 days not appearing in active.

Threads like this www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4708880-winter-weather-outlook-part-2-into-january-23 don't appear in active after 30 days any more. This is because of issues created by the 'Similar threads' alogorithm bumping up old threads.

Old threads continue to end up being bumped and posted on inappropriately, while long standing well used threads are suppressed. This clearly isn't working. @mnhq please can you resolve this issue.

@mnhq just a bump for this post - I love the weather thread and hate that it's not in Active anymore! There are others that are similar too, that are really current and engaging but hidden due to the 30 days rule.

Can there be a smarter fix to the 'Similar threads' Zombie nightmare than hiding all the great threads older than 30 days, please?

Notonthestairs · 28/02/2023 11:02

I agree with YBBK.

Far too many old threads being replied to long after the initial post was made and resolved AND more current threads dropping off Active.

The alternative is to abandon long running threads and start again to revive traffic which makes little sense (to me at least).

HopeMumsnet · 28/02/2023 11:55

Hmm, yes, thanks for bringing this to our attention, speaking as someone who also enjoys the weather thread. Let us have a look and get back to you.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/02/2023 12:27

Thanks @HopeMumsnet Smile

I'm glad you're looking at this and hope it can be resolved quickly.

Several of the longer/older threads are very useful/interesting ones, and I think it's a shame that so many support threads become invisible

RafaistheKingofClay · 28/02/2023 12:53

Glad you are looking at this again. Hopefully you can find a solution.

Hi all,
We've just had a big chat about this with the techs and developers and looked into everyone's settings and we can see you're all set to see all the posts. Just so you know, threads older than 30 days aren't excluded from Active unless users explicitly want them to be. The option is there but most don't take it up.

What that means is that your thread, and the other long-running threads, are subject to the same conditions as any other thread on the site, conditions that fwiw pre-date the introduction of 'similar threads'.

Clearly, however, it's not feeling that way to everyone. That may be a function of the site being bigger, there being more competition for 'Active' altogether. You want your threads to be seen, and used, and available - fair enough on a discussion site, of all places.

What we can suggest is for you to flag to everyone on your favourite long-running threads that they should use 'Save' to see updates to saved threads, and when that results in more usage, it will also result in more "Active", iyswwm? And so on.

We'd like to reassure you that the more technically-minded MNHQers are most definitely aware of your concerns, and if that anything occurs to them that might assist further you'll be the first to know. We understand the value of the long-running threads to the feel of MN, and we're more than aware of and grateful for your contribution. Some of us are even old enough to remember Lissie's Pub (because some of us are ancient...) and know how important these open, welcoming threads are to new members.

So yes, you've given us a lot to think about, actually, thanks for raising it. Flowers

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/02/2023 15:46

Thanks @HopeMumsnet and to tech for looking into this. I misremembered things slightly and sent you on a wild goose chase Blush

The issue with the 30 days thing if people sign out from seeing threads more than 30 days old because they don't want to see old threads. Which is a minor annoyance but a user choice. Its trending that they will never appear in. Doh! I would love if you could look at that aspect please.

I'm sorry for wasting your time on a misdirect and I'm sorry too to the lovely people who jumped in to support me. I'm blaming being sleep addled from two very late nights aurora watching, but that doesn't give you your time back.

I really appreciate your detailed and thoughtful response too. I should have said that!

Another @OhYouBadBadKitten weather fan here. It’s really important that the really valuable threads are flagged- such as the long running cancer threads and elderly threads.

Notonthestairs · 28/02/2023 16:40

Ok, so threads over 30 days don't appear in Trending. And users can opt out of threads over 30 days appearing in their Active but that has to be an active choice?
Is that right?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/02/2023 16:55

Exactly Not

OP posts:
Notonthestairs · 28/02/2023 17:01

But....I'd assumed that if a thread was indeed Trending it would automatically be included in Trending because that accurately reflects site traffic.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/02/2023 21:50

I think there are topics that don't make it into trending.
