No sex board on active. Please comment if you agree.

I really wish the sex board wasn’t on active. It changes the whole tone of the Mumsnet board when you click on Active. And not in a good way.
If you agree please reply to this post.

Do you think women don’t post on the sex topic or something? It’s not all men, men, men over there

How does my comment imply that I don't think women post there? I've posted there under different names. I was trying to say that there seems to be a shift in the site in general (not just the sex board) in the last few weeks, in a way that doesn't come across as "in the spirit" as MN like to phrase it.

I've seen loads of complaints about really upsetting ads, about the sex topic in active attracting more arseholes, from others upset that they are struggling postpartum and clicking on what they hoped would be a helpful post but was an ad for sex toys, etc.

Russian trolls and sex pests. Everywhere.

I agree.

I dislike that it's on users to hide the topic (often unsucessfully as it keeps reappearing) even those who use the board don't want it in active.

I also really hate the fact MNHQ have said it's nothing to do with outside influences, they just wanted to try it LilyMumsnet - The decision to put topics in and out of Active is always made by MNHQ and it is not influenced by anyone else. We wanted to try Sex in active If they're not going to reverse their decision to have the sex board in active at least own the reasons for making the change, rather than lying about it. 🙄

lovem · 24/02/2023 07:19

"We wanted to try it" ... I think you have? Unless your goals were what we're saying unravelling of course.

I agree. Utterly disingenuous to breezily claim its just something they fancied trying when it is obvious from the timing that it is connected to commercial deals. If nothing else I wish @MNHQ would at least be honest about that rather than treating us like fools.

Absolutely this.

BaroldFromEastenders · 24/02/2023 08:37

I agree. And I wish they’d own the fact they deliberately unhid the topic from people who had it hidden too. They blamed a glitch but all my other hidden topics stayed hidden - just not the sex one

Yep. 💯

EasterlyDirection · 24/02/2023 08:57

It stayed hidden for me, but that is definitely the way I want it.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 24/02/2023 09:27

I hate that MNHQ have sold out to the highest bidder. This site is meant to be a safe space for women and it's being turned into something really sleazy.

(Sadly) there are plenty of other places online where people can be as sleazy as they like so why the need for sleazy content on MN?

Why MNHQ can't see that running a site where many vulnerable women come for support isn't the place to welcome predatory men is beyond me.

BIWI · 24/02/2023 10:01

@JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn

This site is meant to be a safe space for women

Unfortunately it's never a safe space - it's a public forum after all. We all need to bear that in mind, whatever we're posting.

However, I get the sentiment of your post - it's a place which has always been predominantly a space for women to talk. About women-centred issues.

AnonymousHippopotamus · 24/02/2023 10:02

I agree, as I've made clear on other threads.

I'll add that I don't think the sex chat is fit for purpose for the vast majority of users. As I've said elsewhere, it's the last topic I'd post in if I wanted advice about sex because I'm well aware of the audience and contributors there.

Very few of us want MN to be a hook-up joint.

The collaborations with the shrek's ear vibrator company and Ann Summers were badly considered. With the sex topic suddenly appearing in active at the same time, it looks like a deliberate manipulation to change the tone of MN. 'Sex positivity' can fuck off, frankly.

Allowing posters to post in the sex topic after seven days is encouraging a different demographic onto MN. No thanks.

The internet is awash with sex. Women are hassled by males with unwanted approaches everywhere. Why does MN need to be a place that facilitates this? Anyone who's horny can find somewhere else, it's not difficult.

Users here who want genuine sex advice will continue to ask for it under the radar and not in the sex topic. We're not stupid.

Doyoumind · 24/02/2023 11:55

The number of Sex threads in Active is annoying but I hadn't realised they'd put the requirement down to 7 days. No MN.

The whole site is just less appealing for me nowadays. Things are going downhill.

BenCoopersSupportWren · 24/02/2023 12:11

I agree.

It should be opt-in, not opt-out.

There are also safeguarding and legal concerns as a few of us have noted in other threads which need to be addressed as much for MNHQ's sake as for us posters.

AbsolutePixels · 24/02/2023 15:37

I agree. Some of the thread titles are very explicit, and it's not right to expose members to this type of content against their will. Some women will find it triggering, others simply icky. Either way, it's not acceptable.
