Reply count in "See all by OP" mode

MusterMark · 09/02/2023 18:18

Go to any thread where the OP has posted more than once, and there are replies from other users.

Note a highlighted message next to the thread title says "X replies" where X is the number of messages in the thread (excluding the OP).

Click "See all" on one of the OP's posts.

Now the message says "Y replies" where Y is the number of OP posts.

But this is not the number of replies to the OP, it's the number of OP posts. The message ought to show the full number of replies, or be omitted in this case.

I've tried on Brave browser and FireFox.

Hi MusterMark, thanks for raising this. Can we please just check which version of the site you're using? Desktop, mobile or app?

MusterMark · 10/02/2023 11:03

Desktop.

The see all link at the bottom of the OP post has always shown the OP's replies to the first post. Should it not be then? I am confused.

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 10/02/2023 11:08

And when you click see all on the OP, the Y replies has always been the number of OP replies to the original post??

AdventFridgeOfShame · 10/02/2023 11:18

I'm not sure what your problem is.

X - the total number of replies to a thread; no problem.

Y - Click on "see all of OP's replies" and it tells you the amount of replies OP has done.

If your working memory is more than 10 seconds you could probably remember one of these numbers whilst moving between functions.

Would you like it to be changed, so that you have to manually count OP's replies?

It's debatable, and it's obviously not a high priority issue, but to me the "number of replies" clearly means the total number of replies in the thread and that's not something that should change depending on how the thread is filtered. With your interpretation it would be better written "Y OP messages" or similar. It's up to MN what they decide to do with this of course.

Omg I thought I was the only person bothered by this! YANBU.

AdventFridgeOfShame · 10/02/2023 11:38

What I'd quite like is a "see all" option next to all posters on a thread. On a thread with 100s of replies it can be awkward to follow who is making which argument.
Then it would be useful to see "OP's replies 2" , "Advent's replies 2", this may mainly be down to the ads making content jump about so I haven't always clicked on what I thought I had.

AdventFridgeOfShame · 10/02/2023 11:47

FFS why did you get me thinking about this? I was quite happy with the current system.
Now I want it changed to
"total replies X"
"OP's replies Y"
"user A replies Z"

Which means I want MN to be a database 😖

MusterMark · 10/02/2023 12:40

See all exists for all posters, but it's a premium feature.

Thank you, I've not found the descriptions of premium sufficient to make me even consider it.

Hi again MusterMark - thanks for confirming that you're using the desktop site. We just wanted to check that we're seeing what you're seeing!

As this hasn't been raised with us in the past, we're assuming that most people are happy with the current arrangement. We think it's quite useful to see how many times an OP has posted, especially on longer threads. Before we introduced this feature, you'd have had to scroll through the whole thread to see if the OP had returned. And it only takes a second to click on the 'Back to thread' tab to be shown the total number of replies (from all posters).
