Blocking

Is it possible to block a poster?

OP posts:

Only to stop them PMing you if they've already messaged you before.

MeganTheeScallion · 27/01/2023 09:26

No but it should be. There are certain usernames that pop up on certain thread topics to spout foolishness that MN thinks is fine, but is incredibly irritating. It's hard to "just scroll past and ignore", due to the way eyes work 🙄

RandomersAssociation · 27/01/2023 09:40

But we’ve just had a thread on this.

MNHQ made it clear - as always - that it’s not happening.

Why start another thread?

This is a public forum - you can’t stop other people using it. You can stop people contacting you, personally. Only MNHQ can block someone from posting on the site.

HyggeTygge · 27/01/2023 09:48

Blocking wouldn't work with the ability to name change, would it. You could easily block someone and work out what other user names you couldn't see.

Report them if they break Talk guidelines, and practice good forum etiquette by ignoring obvious attempts to derail - go back to the last relevant post and respond to that, if necessary, or post on topic to the OP.

I took it as the OP wanted to hide / block posts from another poster, rather than block them from actually posting on the site. It's possible on lots of other forums.

The comment from MNHQ about simply scrolling past and ignoring them is interesting. It's not always easy to ignore, and if that's the case why not apply it to certain topics? There's an option to hide topics on MN because you might not want to see those posts, the same could apply to certain posters as well.

ImmigrantAlice · 27/01/2023 09:51

Didn’t you ask the same thing earlier today?

RudsyFarmer · 27/01/2023 09:52

I’m going to assume this is based on a thread where you’ve got yourself into a ‘back and forth’ and you want to now block the person as you’re frothing?

My advice is just hide the thread when that gets going. I did it yesterday once I knew I’d become incensed and my anger immediately dissipated. If you’re on the thread then you click the downward arrow which will throw up a menu and hit ‘hide thread’. Works beautifully.

Explain how this would work with name changing. If the person changes username are they still hidden from you? If so you can easily link people's usernames. If this became possible many people would no longer use MN.

If they can get around the blocking by name changing then it's not very useful.

Hi OP

It's not possible to block a poster in the sense that you'd stop seeing them on the boards - but you can block a poster from sending you private messages.

MeganTheeScallion · 28/01/2023 02:57

@LilyMumsnet any chance of being able to mute a user?

HyggeTygge · 28/01/2023 17:18

@LilyMumsnet any chance of being able to mute a user?

If this means "you won't see this person's posts" then that is what is being discussed in this thread.

MeganTheeScallion · 28/01/2023 18:18

They're 2 different things.

HebeMumsnet · 30/01/2023 12:49

Hi @MeganTheeScallion . No, you can't block a user, and it's not something we're currently looking at for a few reasons, some of which are outlined in the posts above. However, you can hide a whole topic as well as a thread, so that might be an option if there are certain conversations you'd just rather not see at all.
