‘Similar threads’

HitMeWithAHotNoteAndWatchMeBounce · 09/01/2023 19:22

Just why @MNHQ?

What is the purpose of this function, when it almost exclusively includes old threads?

It’s so annoying seeing bumped threads in my ‘threads I’m on’, with dimwits replying to old threads, many of which have even been resolved.

This is a new function with the recent upgrade.

Can you please explain the logic behind it, and why it was prioritised over - for example - useful functions like, like defaulting to uppercase at the beginning of new paragraphs…..?

Hi OP

You can hide 'show similar threads' in your talk settings here: www.mumsnet.com/settings/talk We're working to make the feature more useful.

We have quite a lot we want to accomplish on the site and we absolutely understand that it can be frustrating - but we can assure you we're working on it. Flowers

Hii, can you add the functionality to limit the number of Similar Threads it shows?

Mydoghealsmyheart · 22/07/2023 08:31

I’ve tried following the advice of Mumsnet HQ and amended my settings but I’m still getting notifications of “Similar threads”. It’s very frustrating.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 22/07/2023 17:17

Hello @Mydoghealsmyheart can you please double check it's toggled off? https://www.mumsnet.com/settings/talk

If so, and you're still seeing Similar threads, please let us know and we'll investigate.

Hi, I’ve double checked and I’ve definitely turned it off but it’s still showing similar threads.

Hi there @Mydoghealsmyheart.

We've had a good look and can't see any reason why this shouldn't work. It is very odd. Before we go any further with it, can we just double check two things with you. Sorry if this sounds totally patronising but they're things that are easily overlooked...

  1. The wording for the similar threads toggle is slightly different to some of the other settings. So to hide similar threads, the option should be toggled to ‘yes’ if you DON'T want to see them. Just mentioning in case you're seeing ‘No’ selected and assuming that that means you've opted out of seeing them. So just check you have YES selected.
  2. Then are you remembering to scroll down and hit 'save settings' afterwards?

If still no joy, let us know and we'll ask Tech to have a closer look at this one.

Hi, I’ve double checked and I’ve definitely done this so I’m not sure why it keeps showing similar threads. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Please clear some of my doubts regarding your query. "Still getting Notifications" as in mails on your email address or web notifications?
What does the mail notification says? Is it "Check it out here: Similar Threads"
If that's the case, then the notification is about a "New reply on the Thread named similar threads" It's not about the similar threads section.

To stop these mail notification, simply untick the "Watch this thread" option shown at the end of this thread.
Hope this helps.
And please let me know if it works. 😀

Nodi · 25/07/2023 05:24

it's Unwatch Thread at the end of the thread to stop notification for any new reply added on this thread.

LucaJones · 12/08/2023 08:37

The new function seems counterproductive, flooding active threads with outdated discussions.
It's puzzling why this took priority over more practical features. Prioritizing user experience improvements would be a wiser approach.

I get your frustration! It can definitely be annoying when old, resolved threads keep resurfacing. Maybe the idea behind this feature is to give visibility to ongoing discussions, but it would be more useful if there were better filters or options to hide threads that are no longer relevant. Prioritizing more useful features, like the one you mentioned about defaulting to uppercase, would definitely improve the overall experience!
