New feature on MN - Follow topics

NermanaMumsnet · 05/01/2023 14:53

We’ve just launched a new feature called ‘Follow topics’ and this is a post to tell you all about it!

This is a feature we developed after noticing that many people had developed quite complicated ways of following the topics they were interested in - so we've tried to make it easier.

You can follow your favourite topics from the topic index page, or on a thread within that topic, by pressing “Follow topic”.

Following a topic will create a list of your favourite topics for easy access at the top of the Talk homepage. You will also be notified about new threads in your favourite topics via a website notification, but if you'd rather not receive them, you can turn them off in your Talk Settings -> Notifications -> Web notifications - www.mumsnet.com/settings/notifications?view=web

You can manage all topics you are following at one place by accessing Talk Settings --> Manage topics you are following - www.mumsnet.com/settings/followed-topics

We’d love to hear what you think of this feature.

Have a lovely day.

Nermana

Pretty pointless, and yet more screen clutter on the seemingly endless quest to tinker MN into oblivion.

No offence, like😁

I was hoping there would be a filter so you could view all the threads in the followed topics in one place.

I know I could hide a load of topics from my active feed but I like the ‘general browse of Mumsnet’s top 50 threads’ followed by a browse of my 7-8 most followed topics.

I’d be able to keep abreast of all the usual MN goings on and keep up to date with all the new threads in the followed topics without having to click on them all individually

(this is why I don’t post often, I feel like my description is making a meal out of what I’m trying to say!)

EspeciallyDetermined · 05/01/2023 22:42

There is only one topic I go to regularly and it is very easy to find from the dropdown menu so I can't really see me getting much use out of it. I definitely don't want notifications.

EspeciallyDetermined · 05/01/2023 22:44

I should add that I have some of the busier topics hidden (AIBU, Relationships) so Most Active is fairly slow for me and I see enough of all the other topics from there. I usually start at I'm On

All we really want is an edit button ...

thewinterwitch · 06/01/2023 03:26

And an ignore poster button...

Agreed. Grin

I don't understand why MNHQ keep adding features no one seems to actually want. Similar threads, sharing posts, follow topics etc.

Yeah this.

I also don’t even understand this feature. Am I following the whole talk topic from one thread? Or just following the thread?

MN evidently missed the memo about simple UX design. Adding more and more and more clutter is just ruining the site.

Littlechickenhead · 06/01/2023 08:57

But how is this going to help when you won’t move threads into topics? The Harry and Meghan threads are a prime example of this - multiple posters have said they’re sick of seeing them everywhere, especially in AIBU and chat. We report them to be moved and you just ignore the reports.

planefullofotters · 06/01/2023 09:06

I just tried following a topic and it said I would get notifications about new posts on that topic. What? I don’t want notifications! I thought you said it would just be pinned.

You need to get some new UX designers, seriously.

Oblomov22 · 06/01/2023 09:17

I don't want any more notifications.

DevolvedHexagon · 06/01/2023 09:23

Can you not just focus on fixing the stuff that isn't working first? Every time there's an exciting new feature (that nobody wanted), something old breaks.

Oh god this x 1000

Wait so if I followed AIBU, I would get a notification every time someone posts a new thread on AIBU? That could be 100s a day.

Who on earth thought MN users would want a feature where they're bombarded with notifications every time a new thread was posted? Confused

SausageInCider · 06/01/2023 10:01

Can you change it to hide topic instead?

NotAnotherBathBomb · 06/01/2023 10:10

can you invest more in the app? as someone who isnt at a desk all day on a computer i access it from my phone and the app is much easier to read on. still dont have the ability to quote a quoted post! everything you develop seems to be just for desktop users 🙄

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 06/01/2023 18:11

Is it possible to make it so that followed topics appear on their own page with the most recently posted on thread showing, in the style of 'active'?
