Threads crashing all the time

If I try and read a thread over about 150 posts it crashes and goes back to the beginning. I get the following message. I'm using the website on an android phone. Its been happening for a while, I think since some updates happened. Its now happening more frequently and I can barely use the site now as this keeps happening.

Threads crashing all the time

Been happening to me for months, there's a thread about it in site stuff. I'm sorry to say this but I don't think they actually care. They say 'use pages and don't try to load the whole thread in one go' but I hate pages and it used to work fine and now it doesn't since the change, and I have no idea why they are happy with that.

I have a website/forum myself, we check and test it thoroughly when we update things, and no way would we just 'settle' for something like this when users were complaining about it and when it's obvious that things have got worse not better with any changes to our site.

I hardly come on MN these days-gone are the days I'd leave tabs open all day and keep refreshing - wouldn't dare now as my entire laptop freezes with a memory creep on MN tabs that just goes up and up and up until it's using nearly 4gb of RAM (check for yourself in Task Manager and look for your browser and what memory it's using!)

Thanks for this. I hate pages too, but I'll give it a go. Have given up on so many threads because it was impossible to read them. And yes, it's freezing up as well!

Hi OP

We're really sorry that this is happening.

We are aware of the issue and are investigating it.

If you are having trouble with these please change to a lesser amount of posts per page. This does tend to be a good workaround for the time being. Flowers

Thanks, I'll try that.

I've changed it to 100 but it's still happening. I'll try 50.

Hi there @Ifnottodaywhen . It is a bit of a case of finding the sweet spot. We know 25 posts per page is a bit painful but that seems to work. Give 50 a go though and see how it behaves. Lots of people are finding 50 or 100 works ok for them. Thanks again for your patience while we sort this.

Ifnottodaywhen · 14/12/2022 13:06

50 appears to be working, thanks.

Existing thread that is (possibly?) related

Swopping to a different page length is however not the proper answer.

This wasn't happening before, and need not be happening at all. Especially as the site was replatformed so that basic things like this should not be going wrong.
