Why oh why is the Spellchecker in U.S English?

Incredibly annoying, being made to think I can't spell whenever I post.

what spell checker....where, where....oh all my mn Christmas' will have come at once if there is a spell checker on here.

Next I need am apostrophe alert klaxon that will sound as my finger nears the post message button.

Does it have to be automatic, or can we opt out?
Surely for posters a la cod the whole message ends up underlined.

Try typing Stylise, and you will find it wants you to type Stylize

Do you have firefox (or another non-IE browser)?

If so, the spellchecker has diddly squat to do with Mumsnet. It's a standard firefox )or whatever) add-on and you can replace it with a British English version. Now, exectly how you do that I don't recall. But it can be done. Post again in the Geek forum and someone will tell you.

Ah so that explains it! And the confusion in this thread.
I thought MumsnetHQ had gone uncharacteristically language Nazi on us.
