Deleting private messages

Does anyone know, if I go to private messages, and press 'delete chat' does it delete the chat on the sender's message box too?
I want to delete a couple of private chats, just because the thread they were referencing has now been deleted, and I want all trace of it gone (awful thread that went wrong!) But I don't want to offend the kind people who reached out. If I delete the chat, will they know? Or will it just be deleted on my Mumsnet account?

No it doesn't but you can delete each of your messages individually and they will disappear.

Also, sorry, if I delete my Mumsnet account, which I'm considering, then would all my private messages go at that time?

Hi there @WanderingFruitWonderer ,

I think your PMs do disappear on both sides when you dereg but I'm just going to check that for you. It might be that there's another way to disappear them if you don't want to totally delete your account. Hold fire for now and I'll be back - and don't click on any deregister buttons just yet, as once your account is gone it becomes quite tricky for us to make any changes, so I'd just like to make sure you're happy with everything before you dereg if that's what you decide to do.

HebeMumsnet · 21/11/2022 11:28

Hi again @WanderingFruitWonderer . Yep - have had that confirmed. If you deregister your PMs will all vanish from anyone you sent them to. They will be able to see that you once sent a PM and it's been deleted, I think, but there will be no content any more in the PM. Hope that answers your question. Do let us know if there's anything else we can help with.

@HebeMumsnet ah, perfect, thank you. I'm umming and aahing. I've got slight PTSD from a thread I created yesterday! Fortunately the thread now deleted, but some of the upsetting responses keep ringing in my ears. I just think I'm too sensitive for the robustness of Mumsnet. Though of course the majority here are lovely. I've been suffering depression, and have a tendency to post in the heat of the moment and regretting it later, as it can get misunderstood!
Anyway, I'll decide later.
Thank you though. MNHQ are always completely lovely x

No problem at all @WanderingFruitWonderer . Hope you feel a bit better soon.

Please do always report any upsetting responses that you think might break Talk Guidelines. Robust disagreement is one thing but if replies spill into being personal attacks we always want to be aware of that and will take down posts like that. We can also move threads which sometimes helps if, for instance, you've posted in AIBU and are finding it all a bit too much and want the thread moved somewhere a bit more mellow. That's often really effective in turning a thread around that's got a bit 'boisterous'.

Just shout if you need any help with your account anyway. We'd love you to stay if you felt happy to. You can always change name and reinvent yourself, too!
