Is it possible to jump to last read post in a thread?

So when it says in your watching area '61 new' next to a thread you have posted on or started, that it will take you to the first newest comment on that thread?

At the moment I have to access thread from the newest comment which is a link or from the start of the thread. Then remember what page I was up to or do a lot of searching.

I'm on a laptop.
With this new upgrade, if I click on the main thread link when it says 14 new it takes me to where I was last without me having to do anything special.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 31/08/2022 11:27

That's good to know thanks.

Doesn't work on my phone (not on app) though.

Click on ‘add post’ then scroll up from the bottom.

longtompot · 31/08/2022 12:44

I just bookmark the last post I've read and it usually takes me to that. Does that work for you?

LilyMumsnet · 31/08/2022 17:59

Let us know if any of the above suggestions work, OP!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 31/08/2022 20:29

Well it won't jump to the last post on my laptop if I click the blue '13 new' bit.

I can click on any of the 2 or so last messages added to the thread if I want to then have to scroll back up, but sometimes it can be a LOT of additional messages and a lot of scrolling back over a couple of pages so that's a pain still.

Not sure I want the faff of having to remember to bookmark each thread once I've read where I'm up to on it, but I can give that a go.

It would be much easier to make that '13 new' blue bit into a clicky link. If the site knows what the last message I read was, I'd have thought that would be feasible.

Hi OP

If you click the three dots on the OP, do you see the option to go to 'bottom' - this takes you to the last post.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 31/08/2022 20:41

I don't want the very last post though. I want the last post I read when I last read it and added it to my watched items. Or when I revisited said thread.

It knows to tell me how many posts have been added since then, but I cannot find a way to jump to that last post read by me. It shows me the last couple of added posts, but clicking on those only takes me to the end of the thread anyway. I must be misremembering but I thought there used to be an easy way to jump to the post you last read.

I'm with you @DrMadelineMaxwell
That's what I need.

I start looking at MN on the 'Threads I'm on' page.

I don't want to start reading at the end / the last post. I want to start reading where I got to when I was last on, but there doesn't seem to be an option.

Obviously not really an issue if there are 4 more comments, but it there are 14 pages of comments since you last read the thread then it takes forever to find where you were.

BertieBotts · 31/08/2022 20:56

What you're asking for is what the bookmark function does. MN doesn't have a way of doing it automatically.

LilyMumsnet · 31/08/2022 21:16

Hi OP

Oh so sorry for misunderstanding - got you!

We're aware that the bookmarking/last read needs upgrading and we're looking into it. Flowers

Unfortunately, this has stopped working for "watched threads" it only works if you're not "watching" it and click on the thread through active threads or trending for example

If you're watching it and bookmark it - it takes you to the latest posts which it didn't used to do - really annoying on long threads that have been bookmarked to return to later

Type "unbookmark" in the search bar (for me at least - on iPad, desktop site) takes me to where I bookmarked

Kite22 · 01/09/2022 18:45

So, I've clicked 'bookmark' on a few threads yesterday, but not noticed any difference today. Not sure how this works in terms of taking me back to the last post I've read ? Any clues for me please......sorry if I am being a bit slow on the uptake.

BertieBotts · 01/09/2022 18:48

Are you clicking Bookmark on the post that you've read up to? When I do that, and I click on the thread title in I'm On or Active, it brings me to that post that I've bookmarked, instead of to the top of the thread.

I use MN on the desktop site on my computer and on the mobile site on my android phone, and it's always worked with both of these.

Kite22 · 01/09/2022 19:28

Yes, since it was suggested yesterday, but, having opened threads today (through 'Threads I'm on' ) none of them have gone back to the thread marked.

Odd, isn't it?
I'm on a laptop.

averageavocado · 01/09/2022 19:30

Remember when you would get an email from mn and the link would take you to the next post???

This hasn’t worked for me since the relaunch. IPad -Google or safari.
I assumed everyone was in the same boat!
Really annoyed now I know it isn’t everyone.

Thanks, I’ll give that a try

BertieBotts · 02/09/2022 08:32

Now you both mention it I do remember people saying the bookmark function was broken for them with the relaunch, and mnhq had a suggested fix for this (maybe turning it off and on again in customise?) It didn't work for everyone but it fixed it for a few I think. Maybe go back and look at the original threads about the relaunch.
