Ads - inappropriate on some topics

Do MN have any editorial control over which ads appear where?

I’ve just seen in a thread on Alcohol Support (where posters are usually trying to abstain, or deal with negative effects of alcohol on their lives or those of loved ones) an advert for Inch’s cider.

Seems extremely inappropriate- is there any way to stop things like that? There will obviously be other boards where similarly inappropriate ads could appear - baby loss etc.

They are targeted based on your browsing history, aren’t they, rather than what part of the site that you are on?

The ads are Google ads, Mumsnet provides a banner space and Google fills it with what Google thinks is appropriate to you. If you click the little blue triangley symbol top right of the ad you can tell Google to stop showing you any you don't want to see

Supposed to be 'targeted' but some of the google ad (or similar) space seems to be inhabited by horrible adverts that I've given feedback on, over and over and over again as being inappropriate / I'm not interested / covers content.

Like that women with the unfeasibly massive gut one. It's a really awful piece of advertising.

The worst ones used to be baby products on the pregnancy loss threads. I know MNHQ tried to stop them.

It doesn't work for Massive Gut Woman, unfortunately. She keeps coming back.

I’m not sure this is right, though - I haven’t been interested in any alcohol, definitely not cider! And yesterday on a thread about sleeping out in the garden under a trampoline there was a trampoline ad. I think there’s some keyword focus stuff going on, maybe? I’ve noticed other posters mention it as a phenomenon too sometimes. Rather than it be based on individual browser history?

I've every ad blocker on my phone but obviously still get some, I use to think it was to do with browsing history but lately on here I'm getting this HUGE, I mean nearly half a page of beetles legging it all over the place, I'm definitely not googling them.

I have noticed that when on the style board the ads are for clothing and strangely enough someone posted about garden bars and all my ads were sheds and shed bars, maybe a coincidence on that.
