Bookmark being ignored on watched threads

TheSmallAssassin · 16/07/2022 23:09

In the last few days, when I click on a thread in my Watching list I get taken to the latest posts, even though I have bookmarked further up. For threads I am watching, I generally bookmark the original posters last post, as I am often only interested in updates from them. Can you fix this, please?

I am using Chrome on Android.

Hi @TheSmallAssassin - we're sorry to hear you're having problems with the bookmark function. You've said you're using Chrome/Android - is this the mobile site or the app?

TheSmallAssassin · 19/07/2022 22:48

The mobile site (that's why I'm using a browser 😁)

For instance, I have this post bookmarked on a thread I am watching

www.mumsnet.com/talk/relationships/4496983-Tick-tock-the-one-where-Geller-discovers-Polly-is-no-longer-a-doormat?page=7&reply=118540814

If I click on that thread from the Relationships topic, then I correctly get taken to my bookmarked post.

If I click on it from my Watching list, it jumps to the newest post I haven't read, way past my bookmark.

I think it should always honour the bookmark, no matter how you navigate to the thread, and is how it used to work.

Hello again @TheSmallAssassin

KatyMumsnet had this to say on another thread about watched threads, which might explain things a bit. Hope it helps.

Clicking through to the last read post is the expected behaviour on these lists as the purpose is to show you the updates since you last saw the thread. If bookmarks took priority then it might be confusing for many users who have added an older bookmark but are expecting to click through to read the latest updates.
A few users have reported that they do want to click through to bookmarks so we will discuss it - we are discussing a new feature that will let you save your bookmarks to a list so you can find them again - this might be a better solution if that's what you're trying to do!

Chulainn · 20/07/2022 12:25

My main reason for watching threads is for OP updates. It's not for the latest posts unless they are by the OP. In some cases, the latest posts on some threads are variations of "hope the OP is ok".

I'd be interested to know why MN assume going to the latest posts is 'expected behaviour' as several posters have expressed frustration at this latest update.

Imo, this update is not user friendly and is incredibly frustrating.

TheSmallAssassin · 20/07/2022 17:58

Ooh, I would hope your reason for changing the behaviour is based on evidence from real user research, rather than someone "might" find it confusing. It's not expected behaviour if we don't expect it!

Saving threads to a "bookmarked" list sounds awfully like saving a thread to watch...

Given I am a Mumsnetter, interested in a thread where a poster is dealing with an ongoing problem
When I go back to check on the thread
Then I would like to be able to see that the OP has updated
And read the first of their posts that I haven't read.

Given I am a Mumsnetter interested in a thread with lots of tips
When I go back to check on the thread
Then I would like to see the next unread post

I grant you, there is more than one way that I tend to follow threads.

With the current mechanisms, I think the best thing to do would be to jump to the bookmark if there is one, jump to the first unread post if there isn't one. But I think the latter should be on all watched or unwatched threads anyway!

Thanks for your detailed feedback it is really helpful.

We made the decision to take people to the next unread post when clicking on watched threads based on a lot of feedback from users who were requesting exactly this.

We are taking this feedback on board though and we're discussing what to do - now that we are taking users to the next unread post (which wasn't happening previously) honouring bookmarks isn't as straightforward as it sounds so we need to plan it out and consider all the implications.

I have noticed this too and it's really annoying. What's the point of bookmarking if you're not going to be taken there?

I bookmark to take me back so l can continue where l left off.

boatyardblues · 19/08/2022 08:33

I am also unhappy about this update - Safari browser, mobile version of MN. I want to return to my bookmarks 99.9% of the time. The new functionality in Threads I’m On with recent posts previewed sometimes piques my interest and I’ll click through. This is now gazumping my bookmarks. On long threads I can’t find where I got up to as my bookmark is not working. I hate it. It’s made my Talk much experience worse, and impossibly frustrating. Can I turn off the post preview to prevent this? Sometimes I even get the post instead of the thread title due to fat fingers (they are too close together if clicking the wrong link kills bookmarks!).

HighDudgeonAtBerks · 19/08/2022 08:38

Same here. If I bookmark I want it to take me to my bookmark. If people want it to take them to the latest posts then they can just not bookmark.

It’s very annoying that by watching something I am overriding my preferences.

Safari234 · 19/08/2022 11:40

Agree i preferred the old way of bookmarking where I want to go back ton

JoMumsnet · 19/08/2022 16:40

Thanks to everyone who's posted on this thread and explained their issues with the bookmarking feature. We're taking all of your feedback on board and working out the best way forward.

We really appreciate your patience and we hope to have more news for you next week.

Chulainn · 26/08/2022 14:38

@JoMumsnet is there an update on this yet? I haven't been able to look at watched threads for a few days. When I looked at it this morning, I missed loads of op updates because I wasn't taken directly to the bookmark. I then had to go to the original post and view all of the ops posts to make sure I had the latest update. It's so cumbersome and not user friendly at all. It's actually putting me off using the watched section.

LilyMumsnet · 26/08/2022 18:52

Hello

We haven't got an update yet but we will get back to you ASAP Flowers

boatyardblues · 17/09/2022 21:52

I just spotted this is fixed. Thank you. 💐
