Mobile site scrolling and unintentional ad clicks

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 04/05/2022 14:17

I'm using Chrome browser on Android.

Normal website behaviour is for ads to only detect a click if you tap and let go, not if you swipe.

Since the update, ads on MN detect a click even if you swipe (that is, press and drag, not tap and let go), intending to scroll the page. I understand ad clicks might be your favourite thing, but I'm sick of being hauled off to another website every time I swipe to scroll the page and my thumb happens to have landed on an ad.

Can't see anything else on the front page of Site Stuff about this — is it on the snagging list, at least?

Oh and it's especially annoying when the ad is so big that it takes up pretty much the entire visible space, so I have to try and position my finger on the tiny bar of white down the side that I can swipe to scroll without triggering an ad interaction.

Funnily enough, the massive TalkTalk advert that's just appeared for me on this thread does behave properly i.e. I can swipe on it to scroll the page without triggering a click. Some ads are behaving okay but others aren't, and I'm not sure what the difference is.

I downloaded the AdGuard Pro app to my mobile and it’s great!! No ads here at all!! Whoop!

Tempted TBH! Thanks for the reco. I do think MN should fix the ads too, though.

I agree but as far as I'm concerned aggressive, intrusive or inappropriate ads, ads which destroy performance and sites which "trick" users off to third parties break the contract of "I'll accept your ads to fund the site I use".

I've re enabled adblockers for this site until its fixed and usable.

At the moment it's a Dropbox ad popping up on all kinds of threads that's particularly bad for the "haha, you tried to scroll the page but now you're somewhere else entirely" game. Grrr.

I agree I’m still getting the issue on mobile browsing.

popups with ads which have tiny x to close as well that makes it almost impossible not to open it when clicking.

the site has become bloated with ads to the detriment of mobile users, it’s about 3 pop ups a log in screen that covers the page for a while and multiple header and footer ads per page.

mumsnet is the single biggest drain on my phone battery due to the poor optimisation and bloated ads. I’ve installed ad blockers now when normally I wouldn’t as I don’t mind a few unobtrusive ones which help support the site, but Mumsnet is almost as bad a clickbait ad spamming websites not and it makes it unusable on a mobile without an ad blocker

Sorry you've been left here without an update. Just to let you know that we've seen these comments and we're flagging them to our Ads team.

I think the situation has improved somewhat in the last seven months… at least, enough for me to forget I posted this 😂
