Surrogacy board on MN

I’ve only just realised there is a surrogacy board on MN. So disappointed that MN is legitimising this grubby practice of baby selling. Anyone else feel the same?

I don't agree with surrogacy but I don't think spaces to discuss it should be restricted.

SW1amp · 20/03/2022 07:14

Yes,
Completely agree

How anyone can see the pictures of those poor abandoned babies in Ukraine and still support the concept of surrogacy, let alone commercial surrogacy, is beyond me

It’s grim

AchillesPoirot · 20/03/2022 07:15

I don’t think the fact of there being a board means that mn is legitimising it.

Baby selling 😂

Lord I bet everyone wishes it was that easy!

Have you read any threads on that board? Not just the OPs but the replies? MN is definitely not pro-surrogacy, I wouldn’t worry about there being a board for it. The viewpoint that surrogacy is exploitive of women and should be banned/very very carefully regulated is very prominent on every thread.

And the poll has been removed 🙄

It doesn't look used very much

I'm always hesitant to complete go against surrogacy because I had some issues carrying babies and at my lowest point, my sister told me that if our next pregnancy wasn't successful, she would carry one for me. It was a bit of light in my darkest hour and an incredibly thoughtful gesture.

I'm against it for any situation involving payment for anything other than associated medical costs though.

Can you see how different it is for your sister to 'offer' to be a surrogate for you, compared to someone paying someone, mostly living in poverty, to do it?

And yet using donor embryos and sperm is widely accepted as being ok.....do you think women who donate their eggs aren't just as exploited as surrogates? In fact they are more so as often they are desperate to fund their own IVF treatment so agree to donate half the eggs they are collected

I'm fine with surrogacy when the intended parents have a genetic link to the child.

I know 3 surrogates and all did it for their sisters/ sisters in law - no financial reason at all

“I'm fine with surrogacy when the intended parents have a genetic link to the child.”

So you can look at the pictures of rows and rows of cots in basements in Ukraine and you’re totally ‘fine’ with that?

You can read stories of gestational surrogates who give birth to a baby who has disabilities, only for the parents to say they now don’t want the baby so it gets taken to an orphanage, and you’re ‘fine’ with that?

You can read about how attachment issues can start in infant hood and be ‘fine’ about it?

You just really dislike people

ThatsNotItAtAll · 20/03/2022 14:33

Commercial egg donation definitely isn't fine in my book - the women who do it in countries where it's allowed are often left with long term health problems including but not limited to becoming infertile themselves. There are ethical issues for the children created with embryo, egg and sperm donation too (and in commercial surrogate cases there are often two impoverished women and a baby all being treated as commercial commodities, with an egg donor and a surrogate mother involved).

Objecting to MN appearing to condone commercial surrogacy doesn't mean everyone is fine with the other dodgy practices some parts of the fertility industry is involved in.
