A ‘cancel the cheque’ button

34 replies

I understand why MN posts aren’t editable.

But please could you consider some kind of setting where the OP can ‘pin’ a post to the top of their thread giving an update or explaining that an issue is resolved? It would overnight get rid of the ‘cancel the cheque’ type threads where multiple posters only read the OP before responding, despite the fact that the matter was resolved on page 3.

@NightmareSlashDelightful

I wonder if a colour change could help. If an OP comes back and marks a thread as 'resolved' it changes colour, or gets a different coloured border, or all OP's posts change colour.
OP's posts are already a different colour though so changing to another different colour won't make any difference to people who don't care enough to actually pay attention

@girlmom21

Generally if the OP has 61 posts on a thread there's already going to be 7/800 posts.

If you're not willing to read the OP's posts you're wasting everyone's time (and thread space) because a thread that long almost certainly will have developed and, let's be honest, you're not about to say anything original.

We should just have a 'RTFT' button where MN reviews and deletes posts that get 10 'RTFT' presses if the poster is being an idiot, to allow for more thread space.

That's a good idea, but I suppose it would be open to abuse.
girlmom21 · 14/03/2022 10:48

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g that's why I think 10 presses should work as a report rather than automatic deletion. People would just use it to delete people they don't like otherwise Grin

I don't have "fixed ideas" about who should be on MN, I am merely curious about why anyone who is using a forum that comprises written posts wouldn't be interested in seeing what has actually been written.

Me too, but there clearly are lots of posters who don't care what has actually been written! Maybe OP's suggestion would mean the rest of us don't have to put up with these posters so often

The problem is that people use mumsnet in different ways. I have mine set so it shows all posts on one page. However, many people won’t have realised they can do this so may only be viewing a certain number of posts per page, and (particularly if they’re new) may not actually realise there’s further pages to read before adding their thoughts.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 14/03/2022 11:42

You can't view it like that unless you've been here since the dawn of time and chose that setting many, many years ago. I live in dread that it will disappear and I will have to use pages, which I hate.

Every single thread shows how many posts there are, right at the start beside the title and the date it was started. I assume many people never look at that.

Oh really? I have the 1000 posts setting and didn’t realise it was no longer available. I wouldn’t go back to pages!

@Parpophone I can't see the see all button on my phone, would use it otherwise

Parpophone · 14/03/2022 14:58

It seems a bit bizarre that some of the options to make things easier (e.g. see all) are only available to some users. I only ever use my laptop so wasn't aware that see all is not an option for everybody.

I think tonight is the great MN relaunch - be interesting to see how things pan out tomorrow morning Grin
