OK, Tech, or anyone who knows about html, can you tell me why this happens....?

I know this isn't an earth-shaking issue - but I want to know why....

If I want to put a degree sign in a post I type & deg ; (without the spaces)
In the preview box it doesn't work, it shows exactly what I typed & if I press post it stays that way.
But, in the message box, it does change to the little superscript circle, and if I highlight it & copy & paste it in exactly the same place, then it works, it shows up properly in the preview box and in the post.

It's weird.

Couldn't you just type shift 5?

NineRustyLadiesDancing · 02/01/2008 20:28

That gives me % (percent) on my laptop, not the degree sign. Do you have a different keyboard?

Erm no, just a brain that isn't working properly (in my defence I came to this via the other thread about degrees of a pi(e))

NineRustyLadiesDancing · 02/01/2008 20:52

Um yes, that was me too! I seem to have a thing about degrees tonight....

So if I didn't preview at all it would work?

I'll pretend I understood what you said LL - I sort of almost do, but my html knowledge is a bit hit and miss

hi, yes if you copy / paste from a character map it should work. We don't support directly typed html - it just shows as typed.

So why does it work in the message box? It produces the ° there & when I c&p it to the same place in my message, then it comes up in the post.

I don't really need to know - I'm just curious. (and bored - I've just started a thread about the number of sockets in my kitchen....)

Tech · 03/01/2008 11:13

Sorry, misunderstood the question.... when you type ° we convert it in the message to ° which displays as °. BUT, the message box still contains the character sequence & d e g ; (without the spaces obv), which your browser displays as a degree sign. We could get around it by making the message box contain ° as well which would display as °

Clear as mud innit. Thinking about it, we should make that change. Will do....

TenRustyLordsALeaping · 03/01/2008 12:19

OK......

(You do know this is all the rabbit's fault in the first place - she was the one who put it in a post & made me want to find out how)
