Vibrator thread - why is that not in the sex topic?

BIWI · 26/01/2022 21:27

I'm sure it was moved before. Why is it back in Active Convos? What's the point of having dedicated topics if even MNHQ don't use them?!

(Yes, I know - clicks = money)

@BIWI

FFS *@HebeMumsnet* - now there's another vibrator topic in Active!

I do realise/understand that it's all about the money, but really? Do we have to have the sex ones in active convos? Can you not put them in the sex topic where all they belong?

Can your clients not pay to go in the sex topic where their target market is already waiting and gasping for them?

It's a parenting site, with various topics and heaven forbid, to make creation, to quite Sheldon cooper, people have to do the dance with no pants, So basically what's the adverse to people asking about the business so to speak, or are people only aloud to "dance" to make the creations then heaven forbid, the topic is never discussed ?

Fair point, my error on spelling

The sex topic is full of men! But I’m sure they can advise in great detail which one their wife likes.

DinosaurOfFire · 04/02/2022 11:09

Honestly, having the vibrator/ sex themed pinned posts puts me off using mumsnet when they are there. 2 reasons- 1 is I have primary school aged children who can read, and who are near my computer or phone when I use mumsnet, I do not want to have to answer questions on "what is clitoral stimulation" or "whats a vibrator". Another reason is that I have blocked the sex topic, because I feel uncomfortable having those topics in view when I use mumsnet (for personal reasons)- I would expect anything thats 18+ like this to be included in the sex topic, rather than at the top of the page which I and others go to as the main page for accessing mumsnet.

Would it be feasible to make it so we are able to hide the page in the same way as we can hide threads ? So those of us who want to use mumsnet but without sex toys being (metaphorically) shoved in our faces can hide the thread/ page and get on with browsing mumsnet for the content we choose to read?

CaptainCabinets · 04/02/2022 11:13

Self-pleasure is normal and not something that needs to be kept secret and hidden Hmm

I’d like this as well. If I want to buy anything like that, I’m sure I can find out how to do it without having this all over MN when I’m trying to find a thread about something completely unrelated.

Viviennemary · 04/02/2022 12:42

I see this every day and find it quite offensive. Not everyone is into that kind of thing.

It's not about keeping them secret or hidden. It's about these explicit threads to be in the topic to which they belong.

If you know what it’s about and you know it won’t be of interest to you...just don’t click on it Confused

Excatly, it's odd, that on a parenting site, heaven forbid the primary method for becoming a parent, and somehow it's almost considered forbidden by some people that you are not ment to discuss that aspect.
ticktockriojaoclock · 07/02/2022 07:26

Hate to tell you but if you're trying to get pregnant by a vibrator, you're doing it wrong Grin

AlternativePerspective · 07/02/2022 07:40

If you know what it’s about and you know it won’t be of interest to you...just don’t click on it except you can’t just not see the thread title, and on a parenting site, plenty of posters are in the same room as their young children.

Would it be ok to advertise cock rings? Or porn sites?

If women want to find sex toys I’m sure they know where to look without having adverts shoved in their face.

Interestingly there’s a thread in AIBU about this which has come up overnight. It has a couple of hundred posts already, and 86% have voted that it’s inappropriate.

StationaryMagpie · 07/02/2022 10:17

i like vibrators, i own several.

I don't need to see it plastered across the top of my webpage every time i open active convos'

please allow us to hide the damn things!!

StationaryMagpie · 07/02/2022 10:19

i use several adult orientated chats that are 18+ and i make a point of not having them open on my social media when my kids are about.

I shouldn't need to be hiding Mumsnet from them like its a NSFW website.

AnyFucker · 07/02/2022 10:23

This is a parenting website. It’s not appropriate to have this content in such a prominent position.

Ads for sex toys are on telly after the watershed for a reason.

GrandPrix · 07/02/2022 10:25

I bought one based on the recommendations!

Cheers!

JustineMumsnet · 07/02/2022 14:22

Interestingly you're right about the Sex topic being excluded from Active - I've just checked - but I have to say that was news to me. Mumsnet has always been a site for adults not children, and there's certainly no watershed, so if you'd asked me I'd have said it was in Active and I don't really see why it shouldn't be given that you can hide whole topics if you don't like it in your preferences? We have a rule about not posting on the sex topic until you've been a member for 90 to deter trolls.

If there was a watershed then you'd be barred from posting till 9pm Anyfucker Grin
NigellaSeed · 07/02/2022 14:36

@MNHQ - I'd also like to complain - I only have promotional threads about delivery apps and baby food

AnyFucker · 07/02/2022 14:38

You have a point there 😄 Although my sweary nickname is not emblazoned in bold capitals across the top of the page….

Seriously though, it does look tacky. If it’s meant to be “empowering” for women to have their orgasms shoved in their faces (metaphorically) you can count me out.

Keep this site for what it was founded for, and let the sex pozzy wankers find their own grubby little home
