Neurodivergent, Not Neurodiverse

Hi, I'm an autistic mumsnetter with ADHD.

I've been trying to ignore it. But it's setting me off every time it comes up.

Regarding the new Neurodiverse Mumsnetters section - it should read Neurodivergent, not Neurodiverse.

The human race is Neurodiverse.

Autistic people and those with ADHD are Neurodivergent.

Could someone tweak the topic name?

Technically, you're right.

I also mentioned on a thread that one person isn't neurodiverse (because people keep calling themselves or a family member 'neurodiverse') - two or more people of different neurological conditions are neurodiverse.

But speaking for myself, I loathe the word 'neurodivergent'. It reminds me of sci-fi experiments and I hear a sound like an elephant's stomp in place of the 5 syllables when I see that word. Never used it to describe myself and I know some who don't too.

I'd rather have Neurodiverse as a topic because there are posters who have different neurological conditions, so technically, we are neurodiverse. And I've never seen the word used outside of such areas.

Just my 2p.

Actually in place of the 3 syllables, as the stomp (as well as the sci-fi feel) starts with the 'divergent' part.

I see where you're coming from.

My thinking was coming from the assumption that this particular topic was meant to be for autists and those with ADHD.

If it's genuinely for folks with neurological conditions outside of autism and ADHD, that's also fine, but I wouldn't have assumed the title meant that either.

I'll just hide the whole topic, solves my problem I suppose. But if anyone chooses to label me neurodiverse, I've got my eyeroll ready.

I hear you. I believe it's for all neurological conditions/ posters who aren't NT.

Hello @WizbitsLeftEye we take your point & thank you for posting. We're sorry that the name is annoying you.

The name of the new board arose from the previous Site Stuff threads asking for it and Neurodiverse was suggested by several posters. We also have to consider using terms that are commonplace and so easily found in searches. There's not much point having a board if no one can find it. Thanks.

I prefer neurodiverse
