Women and internet security

MNHQ, it occurs to me from reading the forums that a lot of women posting on MN have not had opportunities to pick up some basic computer/device and internet security which can leave them open to stalking from strangers or abusive exes, scams, insecure devices etc.

Do you think it would be worth running a session with someone who can teach this stuff? I would suggest covering stuff like:

  • password creation and secure storage
  • 2FA for email and banking
  • identifying scams
  • how to deal with abusive emails/social media contact
  • location settings on device and apps
  • posting personal and identifying content on social media and forums
  • protecting devices
  • shared cloud accounts
  • stalking using hidden devices

I realise that this can be quite complex stuff for a lot of people but women especially are vulnerable and if you can get some good people I think this would be a really worthwhile session.

Hello @MNHQ. I suggested this nearly a year ago and got zero response, despite it being a frequent issue on MN.

Just to be clear, I don’t have this expertise or know anyone who can deliver training in it. It was a suggestion.

Smart tech is being weaponised by domestic abusers.

It also doesn’t help that women tend to be less digitally literate than men – according to a 2018 report, 61% of people in the UK with no digital skills were women – so it is likely to be a man setting up the smart systems, with women lacking the knowhow to change details or update permissions further down the line.

@LilyMumsnet It’s been over a year. Any response?
