Quoting the opening post

This is getting to be a thing and a very irritating one at that.

It never used to be, because people obviously used to assume that when you reply, you're replying to OP's key opening post, unless you quote a specific other post/comment.

I'm getting quite sick of scrrrrrooooolllling past endless repeats of the (especially if long) OP quoted again and again for the sake of someone posting a minimal 'Sounds awful OP' type comment.

MN could you take away the Quote function for the opening post?
Why is it needed - it's the question everyone is supposed to be replying to anyway. Yes for subsequent posts where a poster might want to address a specific or a fellow other poster. Not at all necessary for the OP, you're on this thread, we can be fairly sure that a general comment is in response to the OP, we don't need the OP re-posted 25 times down the thread.

Please!

I do it by mistake. If I want to quote, or refer to one particular element whilst I'm composing my reply, then I press quote so that the post is immediately above what I'm typing. On long threads, it makes it a lot easier than scrolling all the way back up to the top every time. I then press 'clear quote' before I post my reply.

I often sometimes forget to do that. Blush

Ohhh I didn’t know you could do this! Sorry! I won’t do it again but thanks op, I couldn’t resist trying it Blush

Ooh, the last time someone made a thread about this, they got a whole thread full of posters quoting their OP. Grin

I don't see it a lot myself but I think people do that sometimes when a thread has gone all over the place and they want to indicate they're replying to the OP. I do agree it isn't necessary to quote.

Sparklingbrook · 15/01/2022 16:27

I don't see it much at all. i must be on the wrong threads, but it 's not a huge problem to me.

SoupDragon · 15/01/2022 16:30

I disagree that quoting the OP is never needed. You can't be sure whether a reply is for that or a subsequent post that raises an issue. I think removing the option to quote an OP would be daft.

So do i. posters should be able to quote whatever they want really.

ComeOnSpringtime · 15/01/2022 16:45

I see there's a more recent one. Was thinking about another similar thread that ran for much longer and the OP was quite long. Had most of the posters quoting it for laughs. I'm not sure if it was on Site Stuff though.

Skeumorph · 15/01/2022 18:12

Oh sorry. I hadn't realised that it had already been raised so much. At least I'm not the only one!

Necessary... it never used to be! That's my argument really I suppose. Seems to be a Thing now and it never used to be.

Yep agree! Please Mumsnet!

EstherMumsnet · 16/01/2022 21:42

Just to say this thread has been seen and noted and we'll put it on the list for discussion.

TidyDancer · 21/01/2022 05:43

Just adding my voice to this request. It's seriously annoying to keep seeing repeats of the OP, especially when it's long. Really no need for it so would be great if people could be prevented from doing it!

People have always quoted chunks of an OP. It's only "recently" that there has been a button to click to actually quote a post though. In the past they've used cut & paste and bold/italic. Unfortunately, MN only made it possible to quote an entire post using the button rather than being able to quote only part of it.

Morning, everyone. Thanks for all your thoughts here. We've had a look at them all and are still thinking about ways we could work this that could keep everyone happy. We can see lots of you would like the facility to go, but lots of others actually like the facility, particularly when threads get long or go a bit off piste.

Tech have added it to their list of things to look at. We must be honest - we're afraid it's not a top priority at the moment as there are a lot of things that are just a bit more urgent in terms of fixes and finding solutions for, but we'll hang onto this thread for when the time comes so they can see exactly what the main issues were for people, so do add any thoughts here if there's any more you'd like them to know.

Thanks again for your patience on this. Flowers
