Some users seemingly having "protected" status

MatildaIThink · 06/12/2021 12:34

Hey @MNHQ

Why do some users seemingly have "protected" status on here?

There are some who regularly troll, post comments which are deliberately unhelpful at best, often rude, sarcastic etc. yet their posts almost never get moderated. However when anyone replies to them in a similar tone, or disagreeing with them, those replies get "moderated" almost instantly, with replies moderated out of existence merely by the nature of disagreeing with them?

Why are certain posters allowed to get away with almost anything, what is the reason that they gain this special status?

Thanks

@FlibbertyGiblets

I was called a pretentious judgemental head girl the other day, I was SO proud, even made a salad cat meme in honour. Hee hee hee.
I'm still waiting on the recount flibberty 😉 enjoy your brief status....

@HelplesslyHoping

MN has an entire section of the site dedicated to protected transphobes, if they don't care about deleting them then they won't care about people being sarcastic.
Is this the section where people understand biology? And believe men can't become women and vice versa? Those who want to protect women and girls?

Being rude, sarcastic or unhelpful is not against site rules. I suspect the people you see being deleted who are deleted because they reply to 'meanness' with abuse.

MNHQ certainly can be inconsistent but that's because they want to keep the rules vague and rely on mod's discretion. I haven't seen any evidence of favoured posters.

I think you might prefer a site with stricter rules, OP. Netmums, for example.

See this is the perfect example of what I mean. Some people don't understand the difference between disagreement and name calling.

NeedsCharging · 06/12/2021 14:03

don MN have deleted for unfounded accusations and generalisations I wonder why that post is allowed to stay?

Bunce1 · 06/12/2021 14:06

Haven’t noticed this at all.

MN is more robust than other chat forums. Long love MN.

Starcup · 06/12/2021 14:07

I think OP has too much time on her hands…. I’ve been here for about 18 months under various names and I’m on every day order much, yet I don’t know what you’re talking about.

Yes there’s some pricks at times with very harsh and blunt replies and some just toast for the sake of it, but that’s part and parcel of an Internet forum.

It’s not all flowers and babes, especially when talking about hearing discussions. I treat people how they treat me and that includes on here.

If someone disagrees with me but does so in a descent manner, I’m the same with them. If they’re aggressive in their tone, mine will will be equally direct.

Some posters gets on my tits but I can’t think of many times I’ve reported someone. 2/3 at the most? Just try not to take it personal

PinkWednesdays · 06/12/2021 14:07

I’ve been on this site for around a year, and there are a handful of names that I see that just want to argue with strangers. I just assume their lives are really dull and belittling strangers online is their outlet, but I do find it surprising when they just latch on to something and want to keep arguing about it.

Surprising in that MN doesn’t seem fussed about such behaviour.

Probably no-one reported it. Personally I don't report those because it's helpful when people announce themselves to be babies who can't construct an argument.

I think most of the women that PP is trying to insult don't give a shit about playground name calling.

SexyNeckbeard · 06/12/2021 14:09

It's just a fact that there are transphobic posters on the FWR section. Not all of them - not even a majority but they are there. Just because their posts are reported and deleted doesnt mean those views haven't been shared in the first place.

FWR is one of the most heavily monitored and moderated sites anywhere. Regular posters are very quick to report transphobia. It's heavily frowned on.

Of course people do express (I believe protected) beliefs such as 'people cannot change sex'.

A handful? It's about 80% of the site. That's the fun of it- the threads about people politely telling each other they are witches or asking what colour paint to use are dull.

It's a Monty Python sketch made real.Grin

Of course, that's true anywhere on the internet but the fact that MNHQ are red hot on deleting they aren't shared much. When I report genuinely transphobic posts they aren't around long at all.

I know what you mean. There's one frequent and well-known poster who always seemed to agree with me, and I can remember thinking, 'Oh goody, there's someone else with common sense out there after all'. But after I namechanged (which I do less often than I should), I noticed that all of a sudden that poster was picking holes in all sorts of things I said. Now I haven't changed my posting style or my opinions in any way, but for some reason they decided to have a go at me.

Daft really, the whole thing.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/12/2021 14:32

I don't know about 'protected', but perhaps MNHQ may be more tolerant of people who in general contribute positively to the site. They can see posting history regardless of name changes.

To make up an example - if there was someone who had a history of being very supportive on SN threads, then if they gave someone a tongue-lashing on AIBU it perhaps might go down differently to a new poster?

catzwhiskas · 07/12/2021 18:43

Those people likely to be men or allies tend not to be deleted...they are the ones who are protected. Why this is happening in a forum for women I don’t know

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 07/12/2021 18:55

@Anordinarymum what did you mean by

Well I think you just told me something here Mary?

SoupDragon · 07/12/2021 18:56

a forum for women

It isn't a forum for women.

FindTheTruth · 07/12/2021 22:18

MNHQ today:

  • delete a thread about the massacre of 14 women and one memorialising those women and a key speaker at their memorial who likes posting pictures of guns on social media
  • repeatedly delete BBC 100 women threads, a list of 97 women, 50 of whom are Afghan and cannot possibly identify out of their oppression
  • say that posts (by one poster - 0PhthaloBlue0 ) linking to 'breast binding', 'hormones' and puberty blockers, fall under 'support and advice' and allow a thread supporting a vulnerable mother of a lesbian daughter to derail. At least one of the posts, by 0PhthaloBlue0, breaks the law. This thread gives advice on how to report it
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4420827-Promoting-puberty-blockers-is-an-offence

and the vulnerable mother has now confirmed she's suicidal and calling the samaritans.
@MNHQ@Justine@LilyMumsnet@HopeMumsnet@MichaelMumsnethow could you?

Anontwentyone · 07/12/2021 22:35

It's just a fact that there are transphobic posters on the FWR section.

Take a look at Reddit, Twitter, KiwiFarms in fact any social media platform to see genuine transphobia.
Why bother to single out and target feminists with these pointless accusations...
