Some users seemingly having "protected" status

Hey @MNHQ

Why do some users seemingly have "protected" status on here?

There are some who regularly troll, post comments which are deliberately unhelpful at best, often rude, sarcastic etc. yet their posts almost never get moderated. However when anyone replies to them in a similar tone, or disagreeing with them, those replies get "moderated" almost instantly, with replies moderated out of existence merely by the nature of disagreeing with them?

Why are certain posters allowed to get away with almost anything, what is the reason that they gain this special status?

Thanks

I’m sometimes a troll. Ie, someone posted to ask how many meatballs were reasonable per portion and I gave a MN classic answer of tiny portions. It was a joke. Some people thought I was serious and some thought I was joking.

Likewise, I sometimes give vaguely troll like answers on what are quite clearly troll threads. Like the one where someone said they’d made a million pounds from selling MLM or something and I said it wasn’t that much.

Is that the kind of thing you’re talking about?

MatildaIThink · 06/12/2021 13:01

@CovidPassQuestion

But is this the millennial definition of 'troll' or the real one?
The definition meaning "deliberately being an arsehole".

I think it's actually better than it was ten years ago. One or two got away with a lot then.

I must admit I always thought that Mumsnet moderation was fairly and rather charmingly done until I experienced exactly what you are describing on a thread earlier this year op, under a different nn. Someone had made what I thought was a really racist remark but when I pointed it out, and the poster was rude to me, it was my post that was deleted. And I have been on here since 2002 and never had any problems before, always try to be polite etc. I can only imagine that the other poster had "special" status. I have since looked at other threads and seen this happen. And I say this as someone who doesn't like criticising Mumset as it has helped me a lot over the years.

NeedsCharging · 06/12/2021 13:04

When I first joined many years ago there was definitely a group if posters who were seen as leaders of the pack who were never deleted and could have posters banned with 1 report to MNHQ.
They appear to have long since gone or name changed which is why I rejoined.
I havent seen MNHQ protecting certain posters like that in the last year or so.

I think if enough posters find it offensive as you say and report then surely MN should look at the posts again?

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 06/12/2021 13:05

How could it not be an insult when you post her name in response to the OP? And not only did you post her name but you tagged her in it so she will get an email to let her know she has been tagged. Seriously not cool.

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 06/12/2021 13:06

That^ was for @Negligee

HeartsAndClubs · 06/12/2021 13:06

It’s difficult to have an opinion though without any kind of example. Because what to one might seem offensive isn’t necessarily.

There are definitely some offensive posters out there, but there are also some over sensitive ones. There’s surely a middle ground there somewhere.

She won't because that's not her full posting name 😂
Oblomov21 · 06/12/2021 13:10

Sarcastic? What's wrong with sarcastic? HmmI think Your'll find that's not a crime, and not against MN 'Guidelines'.

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 06/12/2021 13:11

Well at least that’s something!! Grin

Oblomov21 · 06/12/2021 13:11

"more abrasive,"
Ahh. I'm accused of being abrasive.
Still not nasty though is it?

NeedsCharging · 06/12/2021 13:11

There was a period where on a certain board posters were deleted for posting Confused
The sarcasm was not appreciated I don't think.

Swonderswoman · 06/12/2021 13:12

There's definitely a few notorious posters who are unhelpful assholes. They just appear to be grumpy, not needing moderation. I'm not sure I've seen specifically what you're talking about OP.

DerbyshireMama · 06/12/2021 13:13

Ooh conspiracy.

Hm... I'd have thought if someone is cited as an example (as it turns out, not actually a negative one), it would be much better to @ them properly than 'talk about them behind their back'.
HeartsAndClubs · 06/12/2021 13:16

@ Oblomov21 i think that if a poster’s name is recognised people tend to attribute a certain thought process to that poster.

I was accused the other day of being a notorious thread derailer who has nothing positive to offer so would be best ignored,” Grin all because I, and several others, objected to that video of Arthur being shared across social media.

And in that instance it could potentially fit the OP’s definition of someone (i.e. me) saying something, and when someone disagreed they were the ones deleted while I was not.

Actually the whole thread ended up being pulled in the end…

Oblomov21 · 06/12/2021 13:17

"Unhelpful assholes"?
Nope. Can't say I've noticed in the last decade.

Anordinarymum · 06/12/2021 13:17

With regard to trolling, I think some threads which are more like personal attacks on well known people are just disgusting but they are allowed to run on and on which I find shocking.
These threads are always page after page of nastiness.
This is open season trolling on a celeb who has no right of redress, picking apart their personal life etc etc.
Nobody stops any of that. It's like a feeding frenzy.
So someone comes on and says something really stupid and an individual comments on it and hey presto - they get a ban.
I know as this has happened to me.
Do I report people? No. I'm not like that but I do report a troll thread if I think it is one.
It looks to me as if some folks can get away with more than others.

Oblomov21 · 06/12/2021 13:17

How irritating Hearts. Grin
When your game thread gets pulled. Wink

Really? As in “I think you’re a bit of a twat, what do you think about that then?”

Sounds goady.

Yes, this used to be a thing. They were of the 'plain speaking' variety. They had little cheerleaders who came to attack anyone who dared take them to task. I backed off from the site for a few years as well because it was awful. Like Mean Girls. I haven't noticed any recently but they, or their ilk, may be back
