Right, what is MN doing to crack down on racism?

Ostryga · 10/11/2021 21:04

I want a full response.

Because it is completely out of hand now. This is not ok. It’s not just dog whistle and littlle digs, it is blatant. There is horrific racism happening constantly and still the usual culprits come back for more.

I can’t read about anyone other than white being belittled any longer,

WHAT is MNHQ going to do??

is there a particular thread this is referring to?

it's sad to hear, i thought they were usually quite good.

LizziesTwin · 21/11/2021 08:31

Report every single post. No it shouldn’t be up to us as site users but ‘to see the change be the change’.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 21/11/2021 08:35

What thread ?

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 21/11/2021 08:37

I can't imagine horrific, blatant constant racism being allowed to stand.

Nyxly · 21/11/2021 08:38

I aside from delete and ban posters once they have posted something racist, there isn't much that MN can do.

They can raise awareness of issues of racisim. But they can only deal with posters reactively.

Its pretty horrific if MN are choosing to let them stand.

This.
Cornhill · 21/11/2021 08:44

That’s exactly the point. It’s not blatant. Same with homophobia on here.

It’s snide, it’s implicit, it’s coated in a respectable middle class Boden coat. All OK then, isn’t it? I mean, as long as it isn’t blatant

AuntieStella · 21/11/2021 08:47

Ditto ageism.

All we can do is continue to report.

And hope we don't get a suspension threatened for reporting too much.

LondonWolf · 21/11/2021 08:48

The problem is people have different definitions of what is and isn’t racist don’t they? Not always for nefarious reasons. They simply don’t realise or don’t agree that they are being. I can’t see how that can ever be tackled fully. What can MNHQ actually do apart from stamp on it wherever it’s brought to their attention?

Mouseonmychair · 21/11/2021 09:07

And the sexism/misandry here too. I agree about racism but a lot of beliefs i.e a wish to discuss a reduction in immigration simply aren't racist. And I firmly believe that whilst staying in facts (with evidence and sources) some uncomfortable discussions be allowed to stand. There seems to be a great deal of complaints in an attempt to shut down discussion (there is no free speech here as it is a privately owned site). Where actually the views have stayed firmly on the correct side of the law. Some conversations are uncomfortable and will offend but it's important we have them (the sex and gender debate board would have been shut down on many websites). I think we just need consistency of enforcement anything that makes unfounded sweeping generalisations based on sex, race or religion regardless of that group should be removed. For example when statistical crime data is used against men it is allowed to stand take a similar stance against another group grouping by race or religion then it isn't.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 21/11/2021 09:15

Cornhill, nobody is saying as long as it isn't blatant it's all ok Hmm
The opening post is very passionate and I presumed from the choice of language that a particular thread was involved?

Cornhill · 21/11/2021 09:16

nobody is saying as long as it isn’t blatant it’s all ok

But people are saying MN would never allow blatant racism to stand, and the obvious inference is that not-quite-so-blatant-racism does.

CarolineMumsnet · 21/11/2021 12:03

Hello, we do not tolerate racism on the boards and we apologise to anyone who feels they have experienced otherwise here.

We are a post moderated site and so we rely on posts that break talk guidelines being reported to us. We will remove anything that breaks these guidelines including posts that are racist or that are posted with the sole intention of goading others. We also ban users who we doubt are here with the best of intentions.

Please do report anything that you think crosses a line and we will take a look. Flowers

ufucoffee · 21/11/2021 12:46

Tell us what posts all these things are on. The ones that are still up. P.s just because you think something is racist/homophobic etc doesn't mean other people aren't allowed to disagree with you

WomanStanleyWoman · 21/11/2021 22:16

Any examples?

bustersword · 22/11/2021 12:11

There are people on one of the Azeem Rafiq threads defending Gary Ballance who racially abused him.

ufucoffee · 23/11/2021 08:01

@bustersword

There are people on one of the Azeem Rafiq threads defending Gary Ballance who racially abused him.
So are you saying MN should remove the posts? Those people are entitled to say what they think even if you disagree with it
MyBeloved · 23/11/2021 08:10

I agree. Antisemitism is also frequently allowed to stand despite reports. MN need to sort this out.
