MN and the vendor-stalkers

My understanding of how data is captured and used and sold is a bit hazy, but I'm instinctively averse to having companies follow me around online and use my data for whatever they want.

When the data permission thing pops up on MN, there's a link saying 'vendor preferences' (which is easily missed) which takes you to another set of consent toggles. Even if you have declined all the consents on the previous page, on the vendor preferences section you have to individually untoggle approx 150 different companies' 'legitimate interest' consent. ie even if you've declined everything on the first data consent page, 150 companies can still track you if they feel it's in their 'legitimate interest', unless you know to look and take the time to untoggle them.

Here's what it says if you click the ? about legitimate interest:
'How does legitimate interest work?
Some vendors are not asking for your consent, but are using your personal data on the basis of their legitimate interest.'

Isn't this the same as
'Can we stalk you?'
'No.'
'But what if we really want to?'

Have I understood this correctly? Am I the only one who minds? If not, can we ask MN to just give us a simple 'reject all' option that some other websites have?

I would love a 'reject all' button after spending considerable time on two devices manually clicking each one every time I renew my options.

Reject all button please

If it’s in any way linked to marketing it cannot be based on legitimate interests, which is surely what this is about.

comeondover · 04/11/2021 09:12

Yes, Quarantino it's a total PITA.

Strikemepink I don't know what else it's about if it's not marketing. I think it can be used for fraud cases (not the pseudonym kind we have on MN!) but I can't see how that would apply. Hoping someone out there understands more.

Hi - thanks for the comments here. This is a useful thread and the 'reject all' option is covered: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/4390991-Apols-were-going-to-need-to-ask-you-to-consent-to-cookies-again Flowers

Screen shots for ease from the linked thread.
A reject all button promised in the New Year.
