How do I stop the auto play videos?

I'm finding this really annoying when videos keep blaring out unexpectedly when I'm scrolling through posts. Am not on the app. How can I stop this please?

Download Adblocker.

IsabelBeck · 27/09/2021 17:38

We've brought it to the attention of MNHQ but they do nowt.

bruffin · 29/09/2021 07:01

Yes really annoying

More auto playing videos @MNHQ. Here’s a screenshot, it’s at www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4366793-Extinction-Rebellion-co-founder-says-he-would-block-an-ambulance-carrying-a-dying-patient and I’m on an iPhone 7 using the latest version of Safari.

Adblocker if you're using a laptop/desktop version of the site. Wouldn't be without mine and I was never going to disable it anyway - but even less likely reading all these threads about issues with adverts and @MNHQ'a apparent refusal to do anything about it. They don't like people using adblockers, but then don't address the issues that crop up without them. Confused

LilyMumsnet · 05/10/2021 16:32

Hi all

Really sorry for any frustration this is causing - ad blockers won't get rid of this, because it's editorial content rather than out of house adverts. It shouldn't be playing with sound though, and if you scroll down then it should stop playing - is there any chance you are tapping the sound bar by accident?

Saucery · 05/10/2021 16:38

Adblockers do work. I whitelisted MN for a while, but a huge background ad and the auto play ones made the site unusable so I had to switch it on again.
You will get blank spaces in the middle of threads that say ‘Advertisement here’ or similar on a grey background, but no migraine-inducing flickering, or auto play rubbish.

ItWasAgathaAllAlong · 05/10/2021 18:57

I beg to differ @LilyMumsnet. Adblockers most certainly do work for this issue (and all the others, for that matter). Makes no difference whether it's 'editorial content' (whatever that is?!) or 'out of house adverts' (whatever they are?!). With my adblocker on Chrome on my laptop I don't get any adverts at all on any website. Smile

It’s not playing with sound, I hadn’t realised it was auto playing on purpose.

My guess is that from a UX perspective, when most MNers are busy reading threads don’t really register the difference between editorial content between posts & ads between posts - I don’t - which I get must be pretty frustrating.

Why Are these playing automatically? You assured us they would not when not using wifi, yet they still are! Why are they automatically playing anyway? I am not likely to look at anything or buy anything as i am so fed up of these things! Its simply putting me off coming on here!
Bigeggsinapackoften · 07/10/2021 17:32

I have just downloaded an ad blocker. I’m really sorry but the site was unusable and it was eating my data.

Catabogus · 08/10/2021 08:32

I also want to know about this - I have an auto play video of a woman making a Halloween mask. I pressed pause on it as I’m trying to listen to some music while reading the thread. However, as soon as I touch the page at all, scroll down, etc, the video starts playing again, EVEN THOUGH I’VE PRESSED PAUSE! I’ve now paused it tens of times and it has started back up just as many times. Is there really no way to make it stop @MNHQ? It’s very intrusive and annoying.

soniamumsnet · 08/10/2021 15:49

Hi @Catabogus thanks for this. Please can you let us know the version of device and browser that you are using? Flowers

Catabogus · 08/10/2021 16:40
