How do you link to a thread?

I've seen posters putting links to other threads in their posts but can't work out how to do it. Please help

You first need the URL of the thread, so this thread's URL is: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/4314481-How-do-you-link-to-a-thread

Then you can use special characters to wrap the link. You use two of these [ at the beginning and then write the URL then one space and write the text and then have two ] afterwards.

It then produces the link such as this:

At the top of the browser is the box that contains the address of whatever webpage you're visiting. When you're in the thread that you want to link to, click your cursor in that box, highlight all the text (starting "HTTP") and "copy" it (usually control and "c" on a PC). You've now stored the link in the "clipboard".

When you type your new post and want to link to the old thread you need to "paste" from the clipboard. That would be control and "v" on a PC. That will put the HTTP link into your post.

Thanks, that's how I would normally link to things - I sometimes like to news articles, or to clothes in S&B, but the top of the page doesn't show a URL, it just says "Mumsnet.com" and a padlock. Do I just copy that? I'm on the website, not the app

That's weird. I am on the website as well and I have the URL at the top!

Ok, above my pay grade! I don't know why that's happening. You should see something like this www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/4314481-How-do-you-link-to-a-thread?msgid=109664923#109664923 Maybe someone else can help.

@EmmaGrundyForPM mine also says Mumsnet.com but when you click and copy it, it produces the full URL

OwlBasket · 04/08/2021 19:01

Yes, same here, the URL expands when you click to select it. Looks unnecessarily messy the other way y’ see.

Hi all

Can we just check what devices and browsers you're using to access the site, and screenshots of what you're seeing link-wise would be really helpful.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 04/08/2021 21:41

I'm accessing the website on an Android phone. I did copy the URL (mumsnet.com) and pasted it, but it just took me to the MN. homepage.

Hi all, on a phone (iphone for example) safari shows only the mumsnet.com part of the url and a padlock by default, but it is all there if you tap in that field. As others have noted, if you tap the mumsnet.com the whole URL comes up selected, then you can tap again and click copy in the little cut/copy box that comes up.
