RTFT

Sometimes people not RTFT is irritating, but sometimes it's downright cruel or offensive. So, I suggest the following treatment.

 • first time offence, banned for 1 day.
 • second offence, banned for 2 days.
 • third offence, banned for... I've changed my mind actually, three strikes and you're out.

We do find that once aware, people are quite sorry for not RTFT and post to say as much - which we think is quite nice, when appropriate.

Plenty don't apologise. They dig in and tell us they're way too busy to read our drivel before adding their own. Completely unapologetic about the time they've just wasted for 1000s and 1000s of other busy people.

It's already been said on this thread.

Constantcrayfish · 23/06/2021 04:46

The problem is, MNHQ @LilyMumsnet no longer allow you to have 1000 posts per page.

I can still do this? Little drop down menu at the top of the thread. That’s on the mobile site at least. Ditto see all the OP’s posts.

I think posting before reading enough to have a sense of where the thread has gone when the original post is clearly on a sensitive issue is totally off. The risk of putting a giant foot in it is going to be huge.

@DavidTheDog

reading every single thread which is what the OP is asking for

Where have I asked that? As previously explained, read the OP’s posts and the last page or so to tune in to the conversation before wading in.

I have read, and reread all YOUR comments and you never said this?
HumunaHey · 23/06/2021 07:11
@DavidTheDog so you're asking MN to ban people who don't have time to trawl through pages and pages of often repetitive posts? To turn MN into a place where you're only welcome to comment if you have hours and hours of spare time?
Shame, as you'll lose a lot of valuable input from professional people. You'll alienate people who could really benefit from interaction with others but don't have the time because they are single parents. Or nursing sick relatives. Or can't concentrate for long enough to read so much. Or just have other things to do.
You've not really thought this through have you?

Now if you were talking about people who haven't even read the OP, I might be more inclined to agree.
You'll lose a lot of valuable input from professional people

Except 9/10 times the input isn't valuable. They just repeat what plenty of people have said already or say something no longer relevant following an OP update. . .because they couldn't be bothered to read.
@Aria999 - you can, yes. I use it all the time on long threads.
Not on every app. I'm on android and I can't filter by op.

Constantcrayfish · 23/06/2021 08:20

I don’t understand why people use the app. It seems to lack many functions. The mobile web version is absolutely fine though.

Its slower and clunkier.

@RockingMyFiftiesNot you have lost me.

Even if your chosen format for MN makes it slow for you, it is just a case of good manners, respect and kindness not to wade in posting without RTFT. There are so many examples where this happened and the result is at best crass, at worse cruel.

I think you've lost yourself. Read your own posts, you said one thing, then another, and say you're lost when called out on it

NigellaSeed · 23/06/2021 09:45

I am guilty of this on some threads - I wish the app had the op filter - but it's normally on opinion threads rather than narrative ones.

but I've seen a few really insensitive ones. OP asking about her questionable sex life with OH, then it transpires he raped her and she left him,. Everyone's telling her to go to the police. then a couple of people started posting sex tips and links to sex books. :l

I think reporting very crass posts as HQ said will hopefully mean the op doesn't see it
