Style & Beauty

Style and Beauty seems to be really divisive. It seems there is hard core of well-off luxury designer wear afficionados, who don't really welcome anyone talking about affordable high street fashion and the like. Should S&B be divided into two sections? 'Exclusive/Luxury Style and Beauty' and a separate section for talking about clothes and makeup in a more relaxed and inclusive way?

OP posts:

It can be kind of frustrating to ping back and forth between "what bag should I buy for £5000" and "lol, £60 on trousers, do you think I'm Richie Rich", but I don't think a split board is the answer.

pontiouspilates · 18/05/2021 22:34

I've always found S&B to be really welcoming and inclusive regardless of budget. Even when things are beyond my means, it's still great for inspo. Please don't split it!

Ellenthegenerous · 18/05/2021 22:38

I’m not in favour of S&B splitting either

Iamthewombat · 18/05/2021 22:43

No to a split!

It is possible to like both expensive clothes and high street clothes. I do. I get great recommendations here, for shops I might not ordinarily go into. Also I like reading posts from the people who understand fabric, design and tailoring. I don’t want to have to trawl two boards to find that!

And, imagine how many ‘are skinny jeans over and what should I wear instead?’ threads there would be on two separate S&B boards!

TableNiner · 18/05/2021 23:25

S&B is fine as it is.
Property/DIY and Home Decoration are unnecessarily split in that way, to the detriment of Home Decoration.

I'd actually really like to see the injectables and cosmetic surgery in another place, good call botemp.

Lykia · 19/05/2021 04:54

Another no to a split. I like that it ranges from Primark to Prada and even posters with a large budget ( not me) still buy high street clothes. They like to mix and match.

I find when people are looking for an item they should state their budget and other posters should be mindful of that.

If someone has up to £30 to spend on jeans then recommendations need to take that into consideration and go wildly higher that prices Conversely someone had a budget of up to £1000 for a MOTB outfit and people were recommending ASOS.

janlevinson · 19/05/2021 07:42

It's a no from me.
I was the OP on the controversial thread. I too am not keen on splitting the board, especially not for the reasons stated above. I am neither well off nor only looking for luxury/designer items and I honestly don't think you'll find that many posters that are.
I was just trying to make a ~very lighthearted~ point that S&B has changed a lot since I last used to post on there.

That's a point. Something as simple as a pinned post with advice for getting good input might help, including your budget, what style/shops you like, maybe your rough age and body shape or dress size.
Lykia · 19/05/2021 08:43

And not go wildly over that budget is what I meant.

FedNlanders · 19/05/2021 13:27

No split please.

ThursdayWeld · 20/05/2021 12:51

Imo the only split that would make sense would be into Beauty and Fashion.

banivani · 25/05/2021 08:26

ThursdayWeld makes a good point there! But I don't think the section is post-heavy enough for it to matter.

soniamumsnet · 25/05/2021 10:42

Jut dropping in to say thanks for the feedback. Flowers

I’m happy with it as it is. When I’ve asked for ideas or advice I say what my budget is. I link pics I like and brands too. I’m clear that while I might like designers like Rick Owens or Balenciaga or whoever, that they’re way out of my budget and ask for where I can find that sort of look. I’ve had great advice on haircare, makeup and perfume too, and again always say what my budget it, what I’ve tried, what I’ve liked or not liked and think it helps people to give ideas and advice that are within my price range. I love to look at everything from the priciest to the cheapest and put looks together that I can afford. There are some really knowledgeable posters so I’d not like it to be split because I might miss out on good info and ideas.
