Edit function

When are MN going to get their arse in gear and sort out an edit function? It's annoying to have to post again to explain typi s, autocorrect etc and would make life so much easier.

OP posts:

AGREED

BlackCatShadow · 25/04/2021 05:43

I think they are worried that when people get in arguments, etc., that the OP or poster will edit their post and it will cause more arguments.

It’s not that they can’t have an edit button. They just don’t want one.

pastabest · 25/04/2021 07:06

I use the preview function and check my posts through first before clicking 'post message'.

Weeds out the vast majority of errors

saraclara · 25/04/2021 07:14

Another forum I use has an edit button that only works for a minute or so. So there's time to correct typos etc, but not change posts to deceive people or mess with arguments.

grapewine · 25/04/2021 07:16

You're shouting into the void. They've made up their mind not to add one. It's very annoying, I agree.

EvilOnion · 25/04/2021 07:17

That's a good idea @saraclara. This would solve a lot of issues.

I wonder if you could add an edit button with a character limit? So enough to change some spelling/a word but not your entire post.

EvilOnion · 25/04/2021 07:18

Is there an edit on premium?

omg35 · 25/04/2021 07:21

Could it maybe be like Facebook which flags something has been edited and allows you to see the previous version?

Carryonlikeaporkchop · 25/04/2021 09:32

Whilst it might be good to be able to edit some of the horrifically garbled thread titles and hilarious typos, as someone has pointed out above you will just get posters changing their questions e.g

"AIBU to let my DD stay at her druggie boyfriend's house"

could be changed to:

"AIBU to not let my DD stay at her druggie boyfriend's house"

once the poster doesn't receive the replies they want.

There are ways to manage this, for example having a way to view the edit history, or highlighting that the post has been edited. I really don't think it will be as big as a problem as people think. Also MNHQ did say that a time limited edit button was something they were hoping to bring to premium users, and although I don't agree with such a basic feature being locked behind a paywall, it shows they're not entirely against it.

Hi all

Thanks so much for the suggestions. Historically, we haven't wanted to add an edit button because it could essentially change the context of a post.

It's something that has been discussed in the past, but we're always happy to revisit ideas so we will have a chat about this one. Flowers

BIWI · 27/04/2021 15:06

All those of you who are so desirous of an edit button, why don't you use the preview button instead? Then if your typos trouble you so much, you'll see them in all their glory, and you can correct them before you press post.

Easy. Solved your problem.

EvilOnion · 27/04/2021 15:31

@BIWI, quite frankly I can't be arsed 🤣

I use the preview button sometimes and still manage to miss things. My grammar isn't great and sometimes I put a word in which I think is fine then others come along and misinterpret it so rather than have a pile on about why I've used a word in the wrong context i'd like to be able to change it.
