blocking poster sending me PMs

wowiamimpressed · 15/04/2021 21:46

Will they know I have blocked them or will they just think I am taking a long time to reply?

And can I unblock and then read what they sent once I unblock?

I just want a couple of weeks head space from a poster who keeps emailing me, but not to ignore them indefinitely, if I read their message I feel compelled to reply. Maybe I need a better backbone...

If they're causing you this much stress I'd report them to MNHQ.

Evening, @wowiamimpressed - sorry to hear about this; as @BIWI
says, please do report any dodgy PMs to us so that we can have a look into it.

Alternatively, drop us a mail at [email protected] so we can have a chat about things. Flowers

Thank you but I must have overstated the case, there is nothing dodgy about it, I am just too busy at the moment. If I block will they know that I have blocked them? Thank you.

Ah sorry - I misunderstood you.

Can you not just reply telling them that you're too busy but will get back to them later? Not an unreasonable thing to say, I don't think.

I don't know if they'd know that you'd blocked them, but I imagine they would get some kind of message telling them that their PM to you was undeliverable. But @MNHQ will know better!

Did you get your answer, @wowiamimpressed ? Because if you like, you can block me and I'll try to message you and see if I can tell.

DawnMumsnet · 19/04/2021 18:00

Hi @wowiamimpressed, sorry for the delay here.

We've been experimenting with some test messages and can safely say that if you block a poster - let's call them Poster X - they won't know that you've blocked them.

If Poster X sends you a PM while they're blocked, they'll get a notification that their message has been sent, but you won't receive it at your end.

It seems to be the case that if you subsequently unblock Poster X, anything they sent whilst they were blocked still won't reach your inbox, though it will display at their end as 'Sent'.

So in this instance it may be best to send Poster X a PM saying you haven't got time to read or reply right now.

Hope that's clear-ish!

You may want to take up TheInebriati's kind offer if you need to test this further - things might be slightly different for MNHQer PMs.
