So what was with the little red number?

I noticed a little red number in the upper right corner for the first time and thought, Hm, a message? But there was nothing there. The screen went to a past post of mine, but it's not like anyone was responding.

It's notifications for people posting on the same threads you did. I just ignore it

As dementedpixie said, the red dot is to let you know that there have been multiple posts on a thread you're watching. We launched this back in November and there's a (very long!) thread which explains all about it - How to view your Mumsnet notifications.
