Hello you lot,

SAME HERE! Sad

Desktop site, Chrome, for me.

We're taking a look into things now and will be back as soon as we can with an update.

Please bear with!

DawnMumsnet · 19/02/2021 15:56

Hi everyone, thanks for your patience. We're working on a release to try to rectify these issues, so please hang on in there...

TimMumsnet · 19/02/2021 16:33

Hi guys, we just made another release which unfortunately led to a brief outage, but hopefully will resolve the speed problems we've been having recently.

Has anyone noticed any improvements in speed on the app or site?

We made a change to the way the app loads threads I'm on, so if you're using the app, could you check it's working correctly?

TimMumsnet · 19/02/2021 17:59

That's so far good to hear! Thanks guys, really appreciate your help.

DawnMumsnet · 20/02/2021 12:26

Thanks for letting us know that there are still some issues here.

We're looking into this as a matter of urgency and will be back with an update as soon as we can.

Thanks for your patience.

Hi all, We've been suffering a DDOS attack since approx 11.30 this am. Our firewalls are most working but that does mean that you get the message 'checking your browser' message and that the app is out of action for now. Big apologies - we're obviously doing our best to resolve.

@Prokupatuscrakedatus

I am asked for proof of my humanity i. e. by clicking on pictures of bikes etc before I can see anything.
It's an extra level of security to prevent site being flooded.

JustineMumsnet · 20/02/2021 16:27

@sunflowersandbuttercups

It’s not really MN’s fault, is it?!

No other website suffers from DDOS attacks like this.

They need to upgrade their security and spend more on the tech side of things. The content here is great but the tech side is like a forum from about 2005.

I don't think that's true - most sites suffer ddos attacks - some big companies pretty much all the time - they don't always admit to it though.

I've never used a website that has as many tech issues as MN.

Well we do have quite a lot of legacy code (which we are working our way to fix) so there's a fair amount of complexity that some newer sites don't have and in actual fact we suffer ddos attacks pretty much every month - very few actually bring the site down like this one but it does happen. Even Google was down a couple of weeks ago.

JustineMumsnet · 20/02/2021 16:38

@DumplingsAndStew

So is the DDOS attack down to the new release/fix that you've implemented over the last few days?
No

JustineMumsnet · 20/02/2021 16:47

@Graphista

I agree it’s been glitchy as last few days this didn’t just happen this morning.

Communication with users (and I’m guessing advertisers too) seems pretty poor from what I can see. There was nothing on other sm. I emailed mnhq via an old email from them and was told at that point (mid afternoon today) that their sm teams would be alerted - why weren’t they already? So apparently even in house comms are poor.

Yes the real villain is the person/s unknown committing the ddos but in a modern, wealthy business I don’t think it’s expecting too much that your IT security be as robust as possible?

And that you let users/advertisers know when there’s an issue?

The glitches were a separate issue Graphista...

JustineMumsnet · 20/02/2021 16:48

@ifitpleasesandsparkles

App is unusable for me at the moment
Yes sorry the app is out of action for now while the firewall's up.

JustineMumsnet · 20/02/2021 16:49

@AaronPurr

Were the issues in the last few days related to DDOS attacks?
No they weren't - separate issue it seems.

JustineMumsnet · 21/02/2021 20:09

@sunflowersandbuttercups

Um, yes they do, all the fucking time, just probably none you're familiar with. If you ran your own site you'd know...

Again, I do understand that.

But it's only here where it seems to happen so often and where it causes so much disruption.

If MN security is so lax that they're subject to DDOS attacks that regularly compromise their website (and in the past which have compromised users personal information) then they need to upgrade their security systems!

The last DDOS attack to actually bring the site down for any prolonged period was in 2015, and we upgraded our security significantly after that. It's not usual for these DDOS attacks to affect the site - normally the firewall is sufficient. This is unfortunately a particularly large scale and persistent attack but there is no evidence of any security breach that would compromise anyone's personal info.

soniamumsnet · 23/02/2021 14:54

Hi all, and thanks for letting us know about these error messages. We've checked behind the scenes and it looks like the site is running a little slower at the moment. We're keeping an eye on things but please do let us know if it continues. Flowers

TimMumsnet · 25/02/2021 10:39

Hi guys, thanks for reporting this. It looks like we had a short outage for a few minutes last night. We haven't seen any repeats so far today, so we think it was a one-off. Thanks for your patience!

LilyMumsnet · 14/03/2021 11:06

Hi folks

Sorry about that - all should be resolved now. If this isn't the case, could you let us know?
