Can we delete names we dont want anymore??

Can we do this already? If not, can it be arranged? I have a ridiculous amount of names that I registered on a whim that I will never use and some that I have used once or twice but dont want anymore. Thank you please.

TheTwelveDAISYOfChristmas · 13/12/2007 22:02

bumping this as I have dozens.......

MrsFlora · 13/12/2007 22:06

i have trillions!

Boogalooblue · 13/12/2007 22:07

I don't - should I?

yorkishbirdy · 13/12/2007 22:10

Doing this could open up the possibility of trolling though, an example that springs to mind is the For Sale boards - someone could search for nicknames not used for some time then try to register with them and so appear to be a long term user who has not posted for a bit...

iMustBeMad · 13/12/2007 22:10

ooh, been looking for you boogaloo

can you search for nicknames not used?

MrsFlora · 13/12/2007 22:12

gosh, you are right!

CarrieMumsnet · 13/12/2007 22:14

When I first saw this I assumed the answer was yes, but having looked it seems it's not so simple. Will see if there's a good reason why folks can't and get back to you (though might not be immediately.. am going on hols as of tomorrow for a week ( Sorry gratuitous actually if there was a panic emoticon I'd have used that instead!)

yorkishbirdy · 13/12/2007 22:50

Momma - thanks - it is just overthinking, not experience, honest

TTDC - yes with a little bit of effort, pick a time and subject (perhaps one that people tend to come to for a bit then leave), search a few archieves, pick a few names and do a search on those names. Identify those that have not posted for a bit and have a go at registering.

I would guess that with a bit of effort you could get a small list together in 30 mins at most. 30 mins is not long if you then have a ready made set of "trusted" names with which to scam trusting MNers!

maybe I am a closet crim....

SquonkaClaus · 13/12/2007 22:54

carrie - are you not taking your laptop with you?

TecheneezerScrooge · 13/12/2007 22:54

Currently, you can't register a nickname anyone has used at any point in the past. The only exception to this so far has been the auction we had in aid of FSID. The name is reserved even if no-one's ever used it.

JV and Daisy, when you say you have a load of names and would like to delete them, where do you mean you want to delete them from? You don't ever have to "deal with" them in any way do you? I'm not sure I understand what's to be gained from being able to delete them. Or am I being thick?

TecheneezerScrooge · 13/12/2007 22:56

The name is reserved even if no-one's ever used it.

To clarify, I mean if they've registered it but not gone on to post a message under it, it's still reserved.

yorkishbirdy · 13/12/2007 23:29

That was my point Tech, if we change the current system then people could use previously used names, perhaps for a bit of trouble making! (ie in the past we have had people traced by exP meaning they have had to change their ID to protect themselves, imagine if a troll decided to have a bit of a laugh with one of those names or something)

ShinyHappyStarOfBethlehem · 13/12/2007 23:45

LOLing at "thank you please" I say that too.; being a big Avid fan as I am. People look at me as if I am mad. (which I am of course..)

TheTwelveDAISYOfChristmas · 14/12/2007 12:15

lol at your christmas name tech

no, not being thick...just wanting to remove them from the list under registration details, as most I've never used.

not really bothering me in any way, just trying to be tidy
