Why don’t AIBU threads enforce voting buttons ?

This would
A) deter all the irritating “Posting for traffic AIBU to ask you for a scone recipe” type threads
B) give a better feel of whether the poster actually is BU as a bigger range of people will click the button, rather than threads getting hammered by a particular bunch of posters

I have never, ever seen a vote button on an AIBU thread. I can only assume they're blocked by Ad blockers?

user194729573 · 23/01/2021 20:53

The scone posters wouldn't care.

DareIask · 23/01/2021 20:57

Never seen a button... because I use my phone?

tinierclanger · 23/01/2021 23:04

They’re not on the app (although they are on mobile website). Should be by now though.

I used to see them but don't anymore!

Hi OP

Thanks for getting in touch about this.

We don't want to force voting because not all posts are appropriate for a vote, and we don't want to put anyone off posting.

I have the voting buttons hidden.

Many of the AIBUs are so random not actually AIBUs that anyone who does vote has no idea what they are voting for, and so many times you see "oops I pressed the wrong button" so it's all pretty meaningless.

Also, the people voting aren't necessarily the ones that are posting on the thread.

Sparklingbrook · 24/01/2021 11:04

So many threads that aren't even asking AIBU and they have enabled the vote too. Confused

Probably many posters are voting 'YABU' purely for doing that!

That’s what would make it more interesting. You’d get a viewpoint from a wider selection than just people who like to post their opinion.

Don’t see why it can’t be made possible to undo your vote if it’s wrong?

But that just makes it sound like you want to encourage the non-AIBU posts in AIBU.

It’s literally a yes/no response. And then if people want to post comments to back up their opinion, great. Why aren’t all posts appropriate for it? If people want to know if they are being U?

I think you can. Several posters on other threads have said that if you press the "wrong" answer, you can just press the "right" answer and it changes your vote.

I have no idea whether this is true but maybe someone who uses voting could confirm.

SlopesOff · 27/01/2021 10:21

I have voting disabled because it takes up so much space on the page. I often think I would like to vote on a thread but then remember I would have to go and turn voting on, then back off again so I don't bother.

Why is it so BIG?

Angryresister · 27/01/2021 20:24

Lily@LilyMumsnet. Perhaps you could explain why my post in AIBU was moved today without my agreement. It then moved back but no longer has the poll button on it. Please reinstate as this was an important topic. Last time I look YANBU was winning 90% to 10% if you could start it again from there. Thanks

mekitgubakuds · 29/01/2021 15:25

Can MNHQ move posts from AIBU that are not actually AIBU questions. It's really bloody annoying. And if you dare question why they've posted in AIBU you get called a bitch!!

SparkysMagicPiano · 29/01/2021 17:01

@mekitgubakuds

Mostly it's "who made you the thread police?"
Same with all the coronavirus shite posts.

Your username is excellent btw, although I did have to sound it out like a very small child Grin

mekitgubakuds · 29/01/2021 18:04

Thanks @SparkysMagicPiano ! I can't claim it though, I was reading a local dialect book and this one just made me smile! I can picture my grandad saying it!

mekitgubakuds · 29/01/2021 18:05

The translation in the book read "please put the car into reverse" GrinGrinGrin

That's even funnier Grin
