Username Compromised?

I have had 2 private messages during the night, within an hour of each other, from the same username. The messages are directed to 2 of my user names (one that I have not used in a long time).
Both messages were deleted at the senders request so I don't know what was written.
It seems very suspicious, should I be worried?

We've checked behind the scenes and can see that these messages were sent by a student asking multiple MNers (about 80+!) for help with a research project. We don't allow people to use our Private Message function in this way so we've removed all of these messages. Unfortunately when we mass delete PMs, the default message says: 'This message has been removed at user request'.
