Do Mumsnet have to report intent to break the law

LovelyLovelyMe · 10/09/2020 10:19

If a poster openly declares an intent to break the law, are Mumsnet under an obligation to forward their details to the police?

OP posts:

@NiceGerbil

There is a huge difference between someone posting on MN saying they have been a victim of DV or rape and someone saying they were the one who actually committed the crime/intended to commit a crime??

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 10/09/2020 20:36

I'm going to be in a room with more than 30 people tomorrow.
What are you going to do about it?Grin

NiceGerbil · 10/09/2020 20:37

I'm interested in what the op thinks.

I'd say that the number of unreported serious crimes on here is way more worrying than 10 people at a party, personally.

OP.
Check this out.

www.iplocation.net/ip-lookup

First just google 'what is my ip address'. It will give you a number. Enter the IP address into the above locator. See where it tells you that you are. It tells me I'm in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. I don't even know where that is.

Can you just imagine the man hours to trace down a Mum who wants to invite a few people more than is entirely legal for a birthday party for her 1 year old.......... GET. A. FUCKING. GRIP.

Howallergic · 10/09/2020 21:24

Google tells me that I'm 282 miles from where my IP address suggests I am.

Mum2jenny · 10/09/2020 21:30

I had a website saying I was in Cornwall when I was in the Midlands. So I’m thinking the system isn’t very accurate. It may get which country you are in but I’m not too sure about that.

OP will be after you now! Once they get Mumsnet to give the police your IP address, then they track you down of course Wink

This has got to be a wind up thread, surely no one could think the police Have nothing to do but go after people only talking about having more than 6 people in a room Hmm

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 10/09/2020 21:35

She'll have to find that room first!Grin

Can you imagine all the angry "i could just kill him!" type posters being reported for conspiracy to commit murder? Not to mention the ones suggesting how, offering to help hide the body or offer an alibi.

Btw, bananas don't work. You need way too many.Grin

countrygirl99 · 10/09/2020 21:42

@EDSGFC if they aren't investigating real, actual crimes that have already happened they sure aren't going to investigate Betty's plans for Sunday lunch however much you covis stasi crew would love it. And that's been the case for years, nothing new.

DioneTheDiabolist · 10/09/2020 21:50

I work in a sensitive field where confidentiality is important. I am obligated by law to disclose information regarding current terrorism and international trafficking to the police. I do not have to disclose shoplifting, casual drug use, assaults or parties involving 6+ guests in a time of CV19.

To the people having a party. Each family can pre book themselves into a soft play and happen to bump into each other. Obviously they can't sit on the same big table, but they can chat at 1m as they'll be wearing masks inside , just like you can with a stranger? The kids can rascal. This is not full lockdown which is why this ruling is so stupid.

I'm not talking about the police, I'm saying would/should MN let a thread asking if committing burglary stand?

We did this unwittingly at the park. Me,DD another mum and her kids.Well within the guidelines and now law.

Half of DD's class were there too with their parents. No, we didn't run away screaming. The kids played, the adults chatted like normal people.

This is the best/worst thread ever! Hysteria, bat Shottery, conspiracy--loving the madness (but fear the Op is actually not in jest)

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 10/09/2020 22:15

If not. Then they're not a very nice person, are they

They don’t sound nice anyway

And their name is a complete misnomer

Also that 1 year old's "party" may still be legal in some parts of the UK.

2x families of 4 meeting at the park.
Legal in Scotland.
Not legal in England.
15 children+ leaders in a youth group in the park. Legal in England.

Fortunately MN, GDPR and the police have more important things to be dealing with than less than a handful of surplus people that were legal when the plans were formed.

That sounds like a challenge mate 😀
Wavescrashingonthebeach · 10/09/2020 22:23

*Are you aware of the absolute filth that lives on the Internet, stuff a thousand times worse than someone considering holding a birthday party because it is againstthe law

Maybe you could spend all your free time reporting that to the police.*

This with bells on. OP with the greatest of respect, get a grip & get a life.

Maybe start volunteering for your local emergency services and discover first hand some of the utter shit they have to deal with.

And start learning about PRIORITIES

SproutMuncher · 10/09/2020 22:41

What’s this about bananas?!

NaturalStudy · 10/09/2020 22:52

(Unless in some very infrequent and very specific circumstances) there is no legal obligation to inform the police that someone has said they will commit a crime. So no, Mumsnet doesn't have to report it. HTH.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 10/09/2020 22:54

@TitianaTitsling bat Shottery?! Bats are a protected species, I'm ringing 999 right now Shock

Don't you just love auto correct getting you arrested? Grin

wafflyversatile · 10/09/2020 23:03

It is all our responsibility OP not just mumsnet's. I trust you have already reported boris johnson to your local constabulary.

And you have reported the thread to the covid marshal.

TheGreatWave · 10/09/2020 23:16

I think, actually I know, that no one has ever been encouraged to or advised to rob a bank on a "I'm short of cash" thread, so the argument isn't the same.

Oh and Newcastle upon Tyne is in the NE of England.

Domino20 · 10/09/2020 23:20

@LovelyLovelyMe

No, I wasn't comparing the crime-I was comparing the principle.

I don't think that there would be too many 'crimes' would be a justification for the police to ignore them.

Anyway, no-one really seems to know the answer, so I suppose the best people to ask would be the police or one of these new Covid Marshalls.

Thanks everyone.

I'm afraid we're already at the stage whereby police ignore crimes, it's common practice for them not to attend lower level crime incidents and then send a letter saying no further action will be taken.
