Do Mumsnet have to report intent to break the law

LovelyLovelyMe · 10/09/2020 10:19

If a poster openly declares an intent to break the law, are Mumsnet under an obligation to forward their details to the police?

OP posts:
PhilCornwall1 · 10/09/2020 17:12

To be honest, what real details does MN have to pass on about someone? What really identifying information do they have about you?

Bluntness100 · 10/09/2020 17:18

This also feels a bit like ground hog day. When the restrictions were put in last time we saw people watching their neighbours, friends, colleagues and reporting them for any minor infringement.

This is the most extreme I’ve seen though, the restrictions aren’t even in yet and someone wants an anonymous poster reported and because they can’t get to them themselves they want mnhq to do it.

Because that’s what you want isn’t it op? You want mnhq to identify the poster and call the police on them so they can’t have the small party for their child, And hoped that there would be enough support on this thread to make it happen.

@NotYourDawg

in the nicest possible way, OP, I truly think you need to step away from Mumsnet /social media for a while.

This is a very unhealthy way of thinking.

Hell yeah
KetoPenguin · 10/09/2020 17:24

Maybe they could just inbox us the £100 fine directly on MN.

The OP will be out on the streets soon, having joined up to Boris' Army. They'll be too busy for social media, out doing whatever they won't have the powers to do.

awesomeaircraft · 10/09/2020 17:35

I expect MN has algorithms set for certain trigger words, so they can spot convos that will land them in trouble for example (libel cases, non disclosure deals, ongoing trials, etc) and shut them fast. Likewise they will gather stats on other keywords. It would be nice that they have terrorism related algorithm for private messaging but who knows?

However social media platforms have not been known to prevent or assist policing of crime (many news articles report how large SM platforms and phone providers have resisted police request to open up accounts/phones), so I expect MN are aligned with other SM platform on user privacy.

100% spot on!
awesomeaircraft · 10/09/2020 17:37

btw, I am responding to the mention of terrorism raised by OP earlier. I see the convo has moved to cv19 now!

TazMac · 10/09/2020 17:38

@LovelyLovelyMe

Have you considered becoming a Covid Marshall?

SproutMuncher · 10/09/2020 17:44

Conspiracy to hold a birthday party of 10 people 😂😂😂

Truly I have heard it all now.

OP I don’t think that poster should hold that party but fuck me you are being ridiculous with this talk of reporting to the police.

NiceGerbil · 10/09/2020 17:45

I think op is one of those loons who buys a speed gun thingy of the net and photos and reports everyone doing 31 or above on the roads near her Grin

NiceGerbil · 10/09/2020 17:48

OP out of interest what's your view on all the crimes reported on MN

There's (sadly) an enormous number of rapes and DV reported on here.

Goostacean · 10/09/2020 17:50

Excellent thread. Can’t tell if it’s a wind up, which in itself demonstrates the current tragic state of affairs!

anuffername · 10/09/2020 18:47

Good grief OP.

Firstly, what people post on MN and how they are actually going to behave IRL are not necessarily the same thing. If they were, then locksmiths would be making a fortune and there would be an enormous tribe of bewildered DPs roaming aimlessly together with their possessions in a black bag because they left a cup on the side/slept in late/farted/wore the wrong clothes etc etc.

On a more serious note, by your logic, then MN should be contacting the police about everyone who posts about being the victim of abuse - because they are describing an offence right? I don't even want to think about the potential repercussions of that.

OK, so let's suspend disbelief and imagine that MN could somehow track us all down to our homes:

Scenario 1 - "Hello MN poster, we have been told that you don't actually agree with the latest Covid regulations and are going to have more than 6 people for a first birthday party, is this true?"

"Of course not officer (tinkly little laugh) I was just letting off a bit of steam and invented a vaguely innocuous scenario to initiate an informed discussion around the issue"

Scenario 2: Hello MN poster, we understand that your partner has been abusing you for a number of years and we believe that you are a victim of co-ercive control. May we speak to your OH please as this is a crime and we would like to charge him"

The fallout from this just doesn't bear thinking about.

SquashedSpud · 10/09/2020 18:50

Don’t admit crimes online.

I’m not advocating committing crimes by the way.

HotPenguin · 10/09/2020 18:54

The police are going to be really busy if they are going to follow up on every claim of more than 6 people round for lunch Grin

ivfbeenbusy · 10/09/2020 19:04

I do think MN HQ should post on threads where people are advocating breaking rules/laws that MN policy is that it doesn't condone/support law breaking

MN HQ is very quick to jump in and remove posts/ ban posters for what I've seen are relatively minor things where discussions get heated simply because someone has expressed an unpopular opinion and yet it stays silent when people are advocating what is criminal behaviour (like it or not that is what breaking the law is)

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 10/09/2020 19:07

I really think that the OP has enough on her hands, with reporting all the mumsnetters who might in the future have more than 6 people in their house, without You adding to her work load 😀
heyfrog · 10/09/2020 19:08

And people wonder how the Staasi were so successful and claim it wouldn’t ever happen these days. Yeah, right.

fallfallfall · 10/09/2020 19:11

ah yes and for those of us that are in totally different countries? should Interpol/MI6 and more importantly HM be involved.

countrygirl99 · 10/09/2020 19:38

OP I hate to break it to you but if your house is burgled the chances are the only things the police will do is send you a crime number for your insurance claim and a leaflet about victim support. I would rather they improved performance in that department than put resources into investigating whether Betty from no 10 is planning to have 6 guests for Sunday lunch.

EDSGFC · 10/09/2020 19:56

OP I hate to break it to you but if your house is burgled the chances are the only things the police will do is send you a crime number

But say someone started a thread saying I'm thinking of committing a burglary - bit short of cash this week and the offices next door haven't opened up yet. What do you all think? Do you think it should be left to stand including the replies that said "oh go for it op. Police won't be bothered and don't let the Stasi put you off. You go girl"

YoBeaches · 10/09/2020 19:59

@LovelyLovelyMe report it yourself? Why do you expect the administrators of a website to do this for you? Phone the police, tell them, and if they have the resources and the inclination to investigate, can contact MN with a request for information.

MN admins are moderators for the website rules, not the law.

PhilSwagielka · 10/09/2020 20:02

Sneak.

Btw people gathering in groups of more than 6 is not the same as bombing a gig. I live in Manchester and that actually happened a couple of years ago and it caused far more devastation and death than 7 people meeting in a pub or whatever will.

NiceGerbil · 10/09/2020 20:25

Rufus, true.

I was just wondering if op got as worked up when she reads threads where woman talk about crimes that are much worse and have actually been committed.

If not. Then they're not a very nice person, are they.
