I’m probably a grumpy bugger but the recent(ish) changes are making the site unusable for me

The quote function is a nightmare, I hate it. Posters just use it constantly, to the point where I’m trying to deliberately making posts short to avoid pages and pages of paragraphs being quoted.

Then the @ function. WHY Endless bloody emails and yes I know I can opt out (how!?) but surely if you opt out it misses the point? Does anybody actually ENJOY getting ten emails saying that user383826 tagged them?

OK if everyone replies saying they love it maybe it’s me ... in the interim, is there anyone else out there who hates it?!

I quite like the quote one, i only Use it when i agree with the whole thing though so its not quite so often a large quote

I dont use the @ function so I don’t really care...but I appreciate that Could be very Irritating

(Although i made a boob on the thread and had my boob quoted back at me at least 7 times...so i wasnt quite so keen on the quote function then)

Sorry to hear you don't like the new functions we've added, @pregnantandboilngtodeath - we'll pass on your thoughts here at MNHQ.

We know that the @ feature isn't a hit with everyone and if you'd like to switch it off, you can disable it here. Hope that helps but give us a shout if you'd like further pointers.

I would really like the ability to quote part of a post too. Having to wade through a long quoted post is a pain, especially when it's not all that obvious when the quote ends and the new post begins.

I like the quote function. I'll admit I didn't think I would but I do. I agree that excessive use is annoying though, and must be particularly so if you use MN on your phone and have to scroll down a small screen.

As for the @ function, I really don't want endless emails from people commenting on my posts, it's too intrusive for me, so I turned it off as soon as it appeared.

If I want to see if anyone has commented on a post of mine I just go back to the thread and look.

I do use it to tag someone occasionally, but most of the time I just put their names in bold for emphasis.

My bug bear with the quote function is that it is too close to the report Blush

I've managed to get round the issue of not being able to quote just a section rather than the whole thing, and it works, particularly on a long thread when you are quoting someone upthread.

Press 'quote' so the quote appears in the message box, then it is easy to see and to copy down the bit you want to quote. Then delete the full quote leaving you with the copy that you just typed.
