Banning reverse threads

Lockdownseperation · 19/07/2020 08:18

I know a large portions of posts are fake and you can’t trust what is written on the internet but please can you make reverse threads against rules. They emotionally manipulate posters who are usually concerned people who are trying to help. Obviously the OP can’t provide all the info anyway. Surely isn’t not in the spirit of mn to impersonate someone else in order to hear bad things about that person and make yourself feel good.

How will you tell if they are a reverse?

Lockdownseperation · 19/07/2020 08:42

Often the OP announces it.

Sometimes they do reveal a certain amount of hypocrisy though ...

GreekOddess · 19/07/2020 09:06

Yes I think they should be banned. I don't believe they are reverse most of the time, usually people claim they are reverse when people disagree.

LilyMumsnet · 19/07/2020 09:53

Hi OP

Thanks so much for raising this.
We'll have a chat about it in our next meeting and get back to you. Flowers

Bluntness100 · 19/07/2020 09:57

The thing about banning them just means folks will still do it and then not admit it.

RhianFuckingMorris · 19/07/2020 10:07

People will just do them and then not say it's a reverse so no ones will be any wiser any way Confused

Reversevthreads have been goingbon here since mumsnet began. I don't have an issue with them.

I think they challenge you to realise how your bias and thought processes differ depending on how facts are presented.

StuffThem · 19/07/2020 10:18

I hate reverse threads and I can't understand why they haven't been banned yet. They're just another form of trolling. Completely support the petition to ban them!

Bluntness100 · 19/07/2020 10:42

Honestly there is no point in banning them, people won’t stop doing them, at least now they often admit it, if you ban them they won’t.

xolotltezcatlopoca · 19/07/2020 10:51

I never thought reverse was that bad. It's another ways to see the perspective of others. And I seriously doubt you can be sure unless OP admits it's a reverse. How do people know otherwise?

Pomegranatemolasses · 19/07/2020 13:39

Almost as annoying is when someone posts on a genuine thread 'Is this a reverse?'

FelicityBeedle · 19/07/2020 13:41

I’ve seen some genuinely thoughtful reverse threads, I think users should just be careful as to how much of their self they invest in a strangers story

Chuly · 19/07/2020 13:52

I'm of the mind that if it's a genuine reverse, you can usually tell it from a mile away.

I think most of the ones that claim they were a reverse halfway through are usually the cases where the OP is trying to save face after being handed their arse.

FinlandFlag · 19/07/2020 13:54

I think the problem is so many people gp kn aibu for a fight that they pick apart what the op says so much and you KNOW if it was reverse the same people would be on shouting what the other opinion is!

Lockdownseperation · 19/07/2020 14:53

Good point.

Morning, all. Thanks for bringing this up.

To be honest, reverse threads aren't something we encourage at all because we know, for the most part, Mumsnetters don't like them and tend to view them as dishonest, and obviously it's pretty irritating to reply to someone with advice only to find it's actually the opposite case of affairs.

That said, we can see that they aren't out and out trolling and there are a few occasions when it's been a really useful way for someone to get a truly honest crowd-check on something, so we don't ban them completely.

We tend to take each on its own merits (or demerits) so if you spot one (or think you have but it hasn't been confirmed as a reverse) please do report it. We can usually check things out quickly and will often delete them and explain to the OP that it's not something we're terribly keen on and why.

Exactly. If it's a reverse, the facts are skewed so much that it wouldn't even be reasonable to ask AIBU because the OP, on the face of it, is so far from being unreasonable.

There was a recent thread where the OP got their arse handed to them, so quickly declared it a reverse. It obviously wasn't.
