Something on MN making Internet Explorer crash

oldcrock · 21/09/2007 19:03

My PC keeps crashing on MN this evening, usually when I try to refresh the page. It hasn't happened on any other site. The error seems to be something to do with Flash. Is it something to do with your adverts? If so, is it my PC or the site?! Thanks, cos it's making things difficult!

Hello, sorry not to get back to you last night on this. I'm not sure about this as I have a mac but will ask Tech to take a look.

Tech · 22/09/2007 11:49

Hi Oldcrock, Unfortunately it's very difficult for us to check what might be going on on your computer. If you have reason to think the flash player might be at fault, it might be worth ensuring you have the latest version, or uninstalling and re-installing it.

Adobe (the company that makes the flash player) publishes instructions on how to do a full uninstall here. I wouldn't embark on that unless you are fairly tech-savvy though.

Sorry not to be more help....

Hi Tech, thanks for looking into it. I've pinned it down I think to the Orange Motorazer ad - my PC has crashed twice in a few minutes and each time that ad was showing. Don't think I'm very techy-savvy, so will have to ask dp about the Flash uninstall!

mine too

Hi, I think I've sorted this out now - I have disabled the Flash.ocx add-on in Internet Explorer and there is no more crashing - even though MN is requesting that this add-on be enabled, there seem to be no problems.

bigwombat · 23/09/2007 17:04

sorry - I am oldcrock!

tissy · 23/09/2007 17:09

this happens to me at work, but I can't install/ uninstall anything at all, so I just have to put up with it (or call IT helpline and say, " Mumsnet keeps crashing, can you help? ").

RustyBear · 23/09/2007 17:12

Just seen this - it happens on my laptop at work too - same orange advert - but I couldn't ask our techs as I'm not really meant to be on here at work...

RustyBear · 23/09/2007 17:14

I had tried reinstalling Flash btw but that didn't work & if I disable it, I can't run the espresso educational site.

Tech · 24/09/2007 10:54

Hi, we'll let the agency know that that particular ad is causing trouble and ask them to pull it from the "play list".

Tech · 24/09/2007 13:49

Hi, could someone grab a screen grab of the offending and mail it to tech at mumsnet.com? There are a few different Orange ads and we are not sure which one is at fault. Many thanks.

bigwombat · 25/09/2007 15:39

Hi tech, I can't get the error to happen any more, even with re-enabling the Flash, so it looks like the problem has gone away!
