Emails from Mumsnet

LadyEloise · 11/05/2020 10:00

I get emails from Mumsnet telling me I've been mentioned in a post - that is helpful but have my username emblazoned on the email notification Sad
At present, because of Covid19 family members are accessing my computer helping with problems I might have workwise on it and need access to my (various) gmail accounts.
I dread opening my gmail in case there is one from Mumsnet with my user name in plain sight.
Could Mumsnet be more subtle please.
I tried to unsubscribe to the emails but the link wasn't clear and there was a great big ad for something plonked in the middle of that page.
Anyone else have this problem?

Yes!!! It's so indiscreet.

The emails are useful but having your username in the title is a massive privacy issue imo.

LadyEloise · 11/05/2020 12:03

My stress level is bad enough without Mumsnet adding to it. I've already had to namechange because of it but I fear it was too late and my old username was seen by the person helping me on the computer. Sad

Hi @LadyEloise,

Thanks for raising this. We're sorry this is causing you stress at the moment; that's the last thing we want to hear.

Could we please ask if you're able to forward one of the emails to us at [email protected] so we're able to take a closer look.

For now, here's a link to our Talk Preferences page - if you scroll down to the Talk Notifications section, you'll be able to tick or untick the relevant boxes to choose which notifications you do (or don't!) want to receive.

And here's a link to our email options page so you can choose which newsletters you'd like to see.

We've flagged your concerns to our Tech team and will be back with an update shortly. Brew

JoMumsnet
I may be doing something wrong but when i go into the talk notification theres a bloody big ad for a van ?? and nowhere to change my preferences.
Even your reply email to me has my user name emblazoned across it Sad so I have to rush to my computer to delete it. I only use the Mumsnet app on my phone. I hardly ever( perhaps3 times) use Mumsnet on my computer
It really is indiscreet to have the username writ so large.

Hi again LadyEloise, and so sorry for @ing you. Blush

Can you please give us a few details about the device you're using? In the app, click on the three horizontal lines at the top of the screen, then click on Settings, and then App feedback. This will take you to an email page which will list the device, and version of the site you're using. You can either hit send on the email or list those details here.

For what it's worth, the big advert is showing up when I try to view the preferences page on the app too, so I've forwarded a screenshot to our Ad team to see what they can do.

If you're also able to forward one of the @ emails to us at [email protected], we'll try to help with your original issue.

JoMumsnet
I am a complete technophobe hence me having to get help from family with my computer so can't send email with photo.
If you could just ask the tech team is there any way to alert us re being mentioned on a thread without our user name being written large on it at the outset.

Will do! Smile

JoMumsnet · 11/05/2020 17:01

Hi again LadyEloise, could you please just let us know which mobile you're using - is it an iPhone 5 or 5s by any chance?

LadyEloise · 11/05/2020 17:18

No it's an iphone XR

JoMumsnet · 11/05/2020 17:47

Thanks for letting us know - we're still looking into this. Please bear with us Flowers

JoMumsnet · 11/05/2020 18:01

Right, LadyEloise, we're back again with some good news, we hope. Smile We've sorted things so the subject line of our emails no longer mentions your username.

Can you let us know if everything looks okay the next time an @ email comes through?

JoMumsnet · 11/05/2020 18:22

Back again, with the second part of your query.

It looks like when you're using the app and you click on the link to take you to our Talk Preferences page, you're automatically redirected to the Mobile site/web version of MN. The problem seems to be when you're not logged in on this version, so could you please have one more try at clicking on the above link, and then click on the little blue circle with the face in the top right corner of the screen, which will give you the option to log in on the mobile site. Once you're logged in, you should be able to access the Customise options and select which notifications you'd like to receive.

Sorry for all the faff! Please let us know if this works! Brew

LadyEloise · 11/05/2020 19:43

@JoMumsnet thats great re user name not being seen.
I won't need to change my preferences if my user name won't be seen.
Is that for all Mumsnet users now or just me ?Smile

JoMumsnet · 11/05/2020 22:41

Hi again LadyEloise,

Have just double-checked my own @ notification, and can confirm that this is the case for everyone.

The subject line of the email now says: 'You have been mentioned in a post', but doesn't disclose the username. Smile

LadyEloise · 11/05/2020 23:32

Thats great thank you JoMumsnet

@JoMumsnet

It would help if the notifications/talk preferences for was within the user's profile page or at least linked from there. I found this thread after clicking everything in settings/profile and not seeing anything. Sorted now from your direct link above, but very hard to find otherwise.

LadyEloise · 05/11/2020 15:44

I still think with the alert the user name is too visible iykwim.
Much better than before admittedly.

EstherMumsnet · 05/11/2020 21:53

We're going to flag to be discussed with the team.

HebeMumsnet · 06/11/2020 09:26

Hi again LadyEloise,

We've had a look at what comes through again. It doesn't look like there's anything at all in the subject line now that would identify you so someone would have to have opened your email to see your username.

If we've misunderstood and aren't looking at the right thing here, please do let us know though.

The other thing you can do, as we mentioned back in May, is just switch off notifications to your email so nothing would come through that way. If you need any help with that, hit the report button on one of your posts here and drop us a line and we can help you get that sorted.

LadyEloise · 06/11/2020 09:48

Thank you
