A weird symbol popping up

Apologies if this has already been flagged

I can't copy and paste because it's not coming up but it looks like [OBJ] but a bit smaller and within a box rather than square brackets. I'm not sure if it's meant to be an emoji or a picture but on the last thread I was on it appeared to be in place of a picture.

Not sure what it is!

Oh wow, turns out it did post after all! In weird places...

For context: Google Chrome, HP laptop

Hi OP

Are you able to upload a screenshot for us? Flowers

ElluesPichulobu · 07/01/2020 22:15

I think this is when users post their own emojis rather than using the built in mn emojis.

eg these are mn emojis Flowers Gin

these are my phone's emojis and only people with compatible devices will see them and I guess the rest will see (obj): 🦝🍁🍸🎉

Ellues I can see yours though, that's the thing

I'll get a screenshot

I see the {obj} too sometimes. I guess that means you and I are viewing on compatible devices. what we need is for someone with a different device (maybe an apple?) to try the same thing? or maybe my theory is incorrect.

That's the Unicode symbol for Object Replacement Character. You tend to see it when a character doesn't render e.g. emojis that your device doesn't support.

I just looked at that thread, it's where a poster tried to upload a photo but it didn't work.
On my iPad, I just see a blank space, no {obj} both on Safari and with the app

sockittome123 · 09/01/2020 07:18

It's only been appearing in the last few days though, that's why I'm so confused

Maybe there's been an iPhone update with new emojis which aren't compatible with your devices.

I know that sometimes my friends with android phones will send emojis that just come through as question marks.
