ROFL, PMSL - what are the nuances?

And why does no-one on Mumsnet ever FOCL (fall off chair laughing)?

As far as I can tell, the order of magnitude goes
LOL (there is also LOLOLOL etc, which makes no sense but is very expressive)
ROFL (that has a sort of friendly inclusive tone)
PMSL (can be a bit rude - you'd be more likely to use this one if you were laughing at someone)
LMAO (don't see that one very often).

Do you agree with how I understand them? And are there any more good ones?

you have too much time on your hands

flowerybeanbag · 28/08/2007 16:55

Ooh like FOCL.

We should also have SDOK (spit drink over keyboard)

berolina · 28/08/2007 16:55

It's funny, but out of your list I only ever use PMSL, and don't think of it as unfriendly or necessarily laughing at someone at all. I don't like LOL much (not sure why).

Only today, Lucy.
The washing is done. The dinner is prepped. The baby is happily playing with electrical cables.

Berolina - I don't think PMSL is always rude, just that I think it's the one you'd use if you wanted to be. I think.

SDOK - I really like that one

I like to use ROFLMAO sometimes

Kathyis6incheshigh · 28/08/2007 17:08

That's good. Oh I forgot - LMFAO.

I just pondering if it would catch on if I made one up

TRDF (tears rolling down face)

Kathyis6incheshigh · 28/08/2007 17:16

TSDF (tears streaming down face) might be more emphatic.

So where would and fit into your order of magnitude Kathy?
Oddly enough I was contemplating starting just this thread a few weeks ago, but decided not to when I realised that the first comment would be "you have too much time on your hands"

flowerybeanbag · 28/08/2007 17:28

how about PFFS (pelvic floor feeling strain)

LadyTophamHatt · 28/08/2007 17:31

i always say LOLOLOL when i find something really funny.

you're right, it doesn't make sense but i don't like any of the others.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 28/08/2007 19:09

Hmm, these are good. Now we just have to wait for someone to say something funny so we can try them out.
