That is the Drinking Song from The Student Prince, ks.

OK, you're right CD, I checked New Grove Online (perk of job) and G & S are squarely listed under "Operetta". Do feel a la Mike Leigh (Topsy Turvy) that this sometimes unfairly detracts from their originality and many other talents.

look look I've found it

Ein zwei drei vier -
Lift your stein and drink your beer!
Ein zwei drei vier -
Lift your stein and drink your beer

Drink! Drink! Drink!
To eyes that are bright as stars when they're shining on me
Drink! Drink! Drink!
To lips that are red and sweet as the fruit on the tree
Here's a hope that those bright eyes will shine
Lovingly, longingly soon into mine

May those lips that are red and sweet
Tonight with joy my own lips meet -

Drink! Drink! Let the toast start!
May young hearts never part!
Drink! Drink! Drink!
Let ev'ry true lover salute his sweetheart!

Drink! Drink! Drink!
To arms that are white and warm as a rose in the sun
Drink! Drink! Drink!
To hearts that will love one, only when I am the one
Here's a hope that those soft arms will twine
Tenderly, trustingly soon around mine

All I ask is the right to see
Those smiling eyes beguiling me -

Drink! Drink! Let the toast start!
May young hearts never part!
Drink! Drink! Drink!
Let ev'ry true lover salute his sweetheart!
Let's drink!

Back to New Grove Online:

Operetta
(It.: diminutive of ?opera?; Fr. opérette; Ger. Operette; Sp. opereta).
A light opera with spoken dialogue, songs and dances. Emphasizing music rich in melody and based on 19th-century operatic styles, the form flourished during the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th. During the 20th century it evolved into and was largely superseded by the Musical comedy. The term ?operetta? was originally applied in a more general way to describe works that were short, or otherwise less ambitious, derivatives of opera.

HTH ks!

CountessDracula · 30/09/2004 15:51

I know Tosca, go on

FWIW I think Tosca is an arse. No idea why anyone was after her knickers in the first place, I wouldn't touch her with a bargepole if I were a man.

Think operetta has words and singing, opera everything is sung.

Isn't there an apocryphal tale of a well-built Tosca insisting on a mattress behind the scenery for her death scene, and then doinging up and down in full view of the audience for several minutes after her supposed demise?

agy · 30/09/2004 16:08

Well sorry to go off current topic, but I just wondered - if a very young and inexperienced mum came on here and read the latest calpol thread, believed what the poster was spouting, and acted on it with dire consequences, would Mumsnet be prepared to take responsibility? I think some responsibility must go along with running a parenting website. I also think it is disgraceful that the calpol thread has not been deleted.

littlemissbossy · 30/09/2004 16:12

I think it has been deleted agy?
But TBH, if someone doesn't know the correct dosage of a medication - they would read the bottle, not take the word of 'some nut' on the internet. The mumsnet team can not be held responsible for every thing we type in here.

conker · 30/09/2004 16:13

sorry to be boring but i think the calpol thread should be deleted to, if it hasnt already. it was still in active conversations when i logged on this morning

agy · 30/09/2004 16:14

Its still there. Topics - Parenting. and you cannot be completely sure.

agy · 30/09/2004 16:16

The mumsnet team should be held responsible. Its their website.

HealthModerator · 30/09/2004 16:18

I've sent another e-mail to the team with regard to the thread you are talking about, Agy. Just to let them know there is continuing concern about it. HTH

agy · 30/09/2004 16:18

Thank-you.

moderatorlou33 · 30/09/2004 16:54

Best thing is to email them .

[email protected]

I don't think that anyone would read just the initial posting though, so would also read a lot of experienced mums and their pov, but I get what you are saying.

Got permission to add moderator onto the front of my name. Thought it may help those who don't know who the mods are.

Hulababy · 30/09/2004 16:58

That's a good idea Lou. Last night the poster wasn't sure who was and wasn't moderators to start with. That makes it more clear by far.

colinsmommy · 30/09/2004 16:59

Does this mean that we have to bow down to you or salute you or something, lou?

Hulababy · 30/09/2004 16:59

I noticed MandS did eventually listen to moderator requests to stop the thread too.

moderatorlou33 · 30/09/2004 17:02

Yes, and leave sacrifices on my doorstep.

moderatorlou33 · 30/09/2004 17:03

As long as they are in the form of half naked live young men.

colinsmommy · 30/09/2004 17:12

Wow, its getting too complicated almost to belong anymore. I'll go see if I can round any of them up and Fedex them to you.

JJ · 30/09/2004 17:29

Remember to put some food in the box and poke airholes in it. Don't want them to starve or suffocate.

Oops, water, too, I guess.
