Threatening email referencing my MN password from the hack

Hi MNHQ, didn’t know the best way to contact you.
I’ve had an email referencing the password that was released in the data hack, was it last year? Saying they have taken over my computer and filmed me and will put it in social media etc if I don’t send them money. The password is the one that was released and I have been linked to the email address. Just in case all the others are being contacted in this way and people lose a lot of money in the panic.
I am pretty sure that my computer is not filming me but it did freak me out a little bit I admit.

I’ll probably ask for this to be deleted when you’ve seen it.

Is it to be paid by Bitcoin? I get those emails regularly. They say they have my password and they have filmed me watching porn and are going to send the footage to all my contacts.
The password is ancient.

Just see reported my thread and seen the contact email so I’ll try that.

I had a similar email
And an it expert said it was a hoax

If you google the text, it is likely to be a standard template. The passwords and email address likely sold on the dark web. Looking to see who will send money.

You can get sliders to cover your camera btw for a few quid from Amazon.

The password is old and wanting to pay by bitcoin and I don’t believe my computer is infected. I just thought mumsnet would like a heads up in case slot of people get them. The password was one only used for mumsnet and I was named in the data list. Although thinking about it this password they have from mumsnet is actually not the one that leak and maybe another site so not mumsnet. As you were

This happens alot.

Change passwords

Move on

I know it’s a hoax and I’m not being watched, it’s just they’ve obviously got my password from somewhere. And it is my password and unique enough that they are not just spamming every person with every known combination of letters and numbers. I just wanted to give the heads up that others might be a bit more freaked out and think it was real as it have their password to them.

Have a look at the thread I linked, you aren't alone. I just delete and Block sender. I must have had about 10 over the last year or so.

It’s all bollocks. Ignore it. I’ve had those emails and don’t have a webcam so I knew they were lying though it still gave me a bad moment!

HuggedTrees · 01/11/2019 21:13

The password is an old one and was changed at the time.

As I’ve said I know it’s a Scam, but someone somewhere has bought a list linking my password and email. That I thought was worthy of raising to someone attention. Giving me my personal email wasn’t your usual scam attempt.
