Targeted advertising Swords

Hello MNHQ.

I've raised this on the thread in question
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3660642-Taking-a-sword-to-the-toilets?watched=1&msgid=89173577#89173577

But I also feel its so serious it needs putting here too.

The thread has the word 'sword' in the title and this morning I've been targeted with adverts for swords when I've clicked on the link.

See screenshot.

I find this incredibly alarming for so many reasons.

Why on earth are advertising micro targeting ANYONE with swords.

I think awareness needs to be raised about this with anyone generating revenue from advertising, and tbh this should be raised with politicians.

In effect anyone who is clicking on a link about swords is potentially a risk. In this particular case, the thread is about concerns about swords - so it's adding to the fear and intimidation.

However given domestic violence, increases in violence against minorities and particular concern about rises in knife crime involving teenagers it's actively disturbing.

Are advertisers micro targeting kids who are talking about knives?

How on earth are these problems going to be resolved if this is something that is a) legal b) being effectively tolerated by companies like yourselves as acceptable practice?

It can only possibly be construed as potentially contributing to encouraging violence by encouraging more weapons to be in circulation.

I'm rather speechless about it this morning.

My word, that is extremely disturbing!

I'm surprised that ads for swords are allowed in non-age restricted media at all.

AnyaMumsnet · 09/08/2019 15:03

Hi there all,

So sorry about this. Could you please grab a clickstring for us? You can do this by switching off internet, clicking on the ad, and copy and pasting the URL. Flowers

I would if the ad was still appearing.

I was getting it this morning, but I'm now getting Fisher price adverts!
