Why underscore chat?

It’s something I have wondered about off and on for a while but never seen an answer and my rather limited search talent hasn’t thrown up an answer. Why is the chat board always labelled _chat?

Underscore is used to bring something first when alphabeticalised. Could it be that?

JellyTots2009 · 29/07/2019 03:33

Yes I agree with PP. It's so it is at the top of forum.

Xraydog · 29/07/2019 07:25

That would make sense but it doesn’t come first

I meant, that I thought it was historical, and it used to, but now it has stuck because it's part of the webpage address..?

Lilyofthefields · 29/07/2019 08:18

(It'll be good to get the definitive answer!).

ShirleyPhallus · 29/07/2019 08:25

Would love to know the answer to this. I can never find chat on the list of topics, only by going to active then finding threads on there

JellyTots2009 · 29/07/2019 08:52

Through the mobile app when I click on 'fun and games', _Chat is top of the list because of the underscore that's what I meant. Then everything else is alphabetised.
So must be different on other devices

JellyTots2009 · 29/07/2019 08:54

That's how mine shows

Why underscore chat?

Historically, it was added to sort Chat to the bottom of the list of topics so that the people who thought it lowered the tone didn't see it . This was when there weren't so many topics and no mobile site or app or anything like that.

AnyaMumsnet · 29/07/2019 10:39

Hi there all,

Thanks so much for flagging this. We think it was there to keep Chat at the beginning alphabetically at one point. We've changed it now, anyway.

Lilyofthefields · 29/07/2019 10:48

Yes! What do I win?

SoupDragon · 29/07/2019 11:28

It wasn't to keep it at the beginning, it was to keep it at the bottom when there was just one list of topics and no sections.

SoupDragon · 29/07/2019 11:49

I cant find the original thread where people were frothing about it but this one comments on how good it is that it is sorted to the bottom.

SoupDragon · 29/07/2019 11:54

Aha! I need to get a life...

Hi all,
Here's what we've decided to do. Tonight Tech's going to start a new Chat topic thread, which will appear at the bottom of the topics list on the talk home page and the last day/ find new messages pages (by the way it may have to be called zzchat, to make sure it appears at the bottom of the page, but don't let this put you off). We've been umming and ahhing about this for some time and as the current system seems to be periodically causing tension it seems sensible to make a change

Xraydog · 29/07/2019 12:31

Lowers the tone Grin I guess that was before AIBU!

Also Shock my post has been a catalyst for change on MN. Claim to fame or what Grin

Soup - thanks for the flash back threads, I love reading those oldies- everyone knows each other and it’s all so chummy. I joined MN in 2009 and it felt quite cozy even then.
