Daily fucking mail

Hi MNHQ,

Since you're so interested in improving the site lately, like for instance; asking people to pay for something that's free. Perhaps you'd be interested to know that there's something that's ruining the site for many users.

The daily mail are taking more and more threads and publishing them. You must be aware of how posters feel about this, you're constantly having to delete people's comments etc after the thread is stolen. So why aren't you doing anything about it?

Yes you've probably covered it in your small print, but you know fully well that it's now stopping people posting for advice. Perhaps people might pay your silly subscription fee if you solved the real problems, instead of giving out stupid emojis.

Perhaps a topic that's not allowed to be stolen from?

Agree with @bruffin - the virtue signalling about the DM does make posters look a bit stupid.

Also I'm amazed how people can get cross about a public forum. It's public! Talk to your friends or a doctor if you want to keep it private.

LikeDolphinsCanSwin · 12/07/2019 10:34

People post about very personal issues on here because they feel safe to do so

People need to understand that posting here is placing their post in the public domain. They have been told often enough.

People also need to stop putting stupid DM comments in their posts. It is meaningless and just highlights their lack of understanding.

Sparklingbrook · 12/07/2019 10:35

If you don't want it shared in the press or on the TV don't post. It's really that simple.

SerendipityJane · 12/07/2019 10:45

Another approach would be to subtly snare the DM into publishing a total load of bollocks (I know, who'd notice ?). If a few MNetters decided to pool their creativity, and develop a fictional cast of characters with a soap-worthy litany of problems that they post on MN, you could tie them up for quite a while. And like scumbag scammers, while they are wasting their time on the nonsense, they aren't lifting real stories from real people.

(It's why I try to waste scammers time when I get phishing emails or calls ....)

If you could invent a retired schoolteacher (white, naturally) who was being terrorised by gangs of black Polish-Romanian benefit claimants who smoke "skank" all day whilst chanting "Cor-byn, Cor-byn" to the tune of "Ode to Joy" then you could probably create a long running exposé of broken Britain today. Obviously they'd have to be Muslamic too.

Maybe "Gladys" or "Ethel" ? Since she doesn't exist, she's hardly likely to give a toss either way. But in Daily Mail Land, it would be critical.

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 12/07/2019 10:46

They're ALWAYS discussing MN threads on Loose Women and yet I've never seen one poster mention it, thousands slagging off the DM though. What's the difference?

tisonlymeagain · 12/07/2019 10:52

I don't think there's much that can be done about it, it's annoying but it's out there on a public forum.

The worst thing is it's just lazy journalism. Imagine going to uni to study to become a journalist and then you just copy things from the internet.

SerendipityJane · 12/07/2019 10:55

Imagine going to uni to study to become a journalist

Given the pisspoor state of what passes for "journalism" these days, I'd be curious to know what you thought you'd be doing ? Presumably 3 years on font choice, Betteridges Law and synonyms for "black", and an afternoon on "checking your sources" ?

tisonlymeagain · 12/07/2019 11:07

@SerendipityJane Grin I don't think it can be much more than that.

ComeAndDance · 12/07/2019 11:11

What makes me laugh is that poeple post stuff that can be sensitive, change sme details to make less recognisable or refuse to make xx explicit and THEN they get slaughetered because clearly how dare they not putting their whole life on MN Hmm

SerendipityJane · 12/07/2019 11:40

People also need to stop putting stupid DM comments in their posts. It is meaningless and just highlights their lack of understanding.

If they actually use "Daily Mail", then enough of them will start to screw the Google-fu, and MN could appear above "The Daily Mail" in searches. Including all the thread titles suggesting the Daily Mail is just another shite rag. At the very least they will cost the Daily Mail a bit extra in Search Engine Optimisation spending. It also definitely skews Google results outside the UK. I can put up with small annoyances if it pisses The Daily Mail off enough.

Did I mention the Daily Mail was the only newspaper that supported Hitler in the 1930s ? They had a headline "Hurrah for the blackshirts". Probably the last time anything black had a good press in The Daily Mail.

Rachelover40 · 12/07/2019 12:15

As we are all anonymous on here, even if stories/threads are quoted in the media the press won't know the identities of the posters.

TheJellyBabyMadeMeDoIt · 12/07/2019 12:23

I live in Cheshire. On my Facebook feed I read an article about a mum with kids with silly names, it was a link to the Widnes Reporter (or something), I then saw they'd lifted it from The Liverpool Echo and THEN reading on the family are from Hull.

It's rife. The papers need to keep current and have a fast turnover of news to keep our interest. Its expensive to pay journalists to find original content, so they pilfer Mumsnet, Reddit and every other relevant forum as well as other newspapers.

Mumsnet is no different and it is available to all. They don't advertise as being a safe, private platform. User discretion advised.

soniamumsnet · 12/07/2019 13:29

Hello everyone, thanks for your comments - as a few posters have already noted, this issue is something which crops up pretty frequently but we’re always happy to clarify our position.

There’s not a huge amount we can do about it as other outlets would likely claim Fair Use, which is difficult to dispute. In their view, they're just 'reporting' what was said on the thread. Being an open site has a lot of advantages, but this kind of thing is a consequence of that, we're afraid. On the upside, the openness of Mumsnet brings the wisdom of a sizeable crowd, and a huge variety of opinions.

We always like to remind our users that this is a public forum, searchable by Google, legally linkable to - and quotable by - anyone. For this reason our users can be as anonymous as they want to be, (and you can always make use of our name change facility) and we always advise people to be circumspect with what they share online.

If your thread has been lifted by another source, and you’re unhappy about it, get in touch with us and we’ll do what we can to help.

SerendipityJane · 12/07/2019 14:15

How about a special "DailyMail" forum where posts that have been lifted could live once spotted ? I mean it might have the unfortunate side effect of causing even more anguish for the Daily Mails team of highly paid search engine gurus (I bet they get paid more than the journalists ...) as such a concentration of discussion about the Daily Mail would be sure to affect their PageRanking.

Still, you shouldn't start something you can't finish.

I'm not sure what people think MNHQ could do to stop this?

Not try to stop it ?

Seriously, use your enemies strength against them. And believe me, the Daily Mail is the enemy of every decent person in Britain today.

Do grow up!

bruffin · 12/07/2019 14:47

honestly SeredipityJane, all newspapers lift stories,The Mirror supported the blackshirts and even wanted to do a Facist woman of the year beauty contest, they also lift stories from here, they also lift "DM" sad face pictures from local papers . "DM"sadface photos are usually taken by local reporters, they end up in all the newspapers

SerendipityJane · 12/07/2019 14:50

Do grow up!

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Did you deliberately mean to echo the most disgusting aspect of the Mail - it's "all grown up" tag line for sexualising young girls ?

www.vice.com/en_uk/article/avn35k/all-grown-up-sexing-up-the-internet-with-the-daily-mail

forums.digitalspy.com/discussion/1747279/all-grown-up-the-mail-onlines-obsession-with-young-girls

I am "grown up". But most assuredly not in a way that the Daily Mail would be interested in.

Sparklingbrook · 12/07/2019 15:01

No, I think it's just MN at the moment.

beanaseireann · 12/07/2019 15:14

I think lots of threads are planted by lazy journalists who use them in their papers.
Mumsnet HQ dont mind - it gets them loads of extra publicity.
Mumsnet is a successful business and is a bit removed now from when it first started with its premise of Mums helping other Mums with advice.
This extra publicity helps the business hugely as advertisers are told of the numbers of people on Mumsnet, this then will hoik up advertising costs on Mumsnet.

bruffin · 12/07/2019 15:21

I do wonder what percentage of threads are genuine atm. Threads deleted every day because of suspect posters.
I think MN should stop allowing NC to start with, or limit it to special requests .

Fromage · 12/07/2019 15:35

Maybe we should bold type insults to the daily mail and journalists as header and footer to all our posts.
