Hi MNHQ,

Since you're so interested in improving the site lately, like for instance; asking people to pay for something that's free. Perhaps you'd be interested to know that there's something that's ruining the site for many users.

The daily mail are taking more and more threads and publishing them. You must be aware of how posters feel about this, you're constantly having to delete people's comments etc after the thread is stolen. So why aren't you doing anything about it?

Yes you've probably covered it in your small print, but you know fully well that it's now stopping people posting for advice. Perhaps people might pay your silly subscription fee if you solved the real problems, instead of giving out stupid emojis.

Perhaps a topic that's not allowed to be stolen from?

Its all newspapers not just, the DM, you are showing your ignorance by getting on the DM bandwagon.

Pinkyyy · 12/07/2019 09:18

I think the DM seem to be the worst culprit, although I could be wrong. But they're the name that keeps popping up all over MN.

OP posts:
HarveySchlumpfenburger · 12/07/2019 09:21

They can’t do anything about it, can they?

There’s nothing legally stopping the papers from taking stuff that’s published online and writing a story about it.

TheSpottedZebra · 12/07/2019 09:22

But other people are allowed to see what's written on the internet!
It's like me posting about a shit blouse on the M&S site - they've put it out there, and I'm allowed to view it and comment on it somewhere else.

bruffin · 12/07/2019 09:23

They are not, all newspapers have done it for a longtime. The name keeps popping up because there are a lot of posters that virtue signal about the DM. They think it makes them look intelligent but those stupid caveats about DM just make them look not that bright. As if that will stop a news paper from lifting the story.

gamerchick · 12/07/2019 09:25

Personally I think most of the threads lifted are planted there for that purpose, by those journos.

Pinkyyy · 12/07/2019 09:26

Ah I see, perhaps DM are just getting all the blame for it then. I do think it's a problem though. People post about very personal issues on here because they feel safe to do so, and it seems wrong for those problems to be published, without even asking their permission. Surely they could send a PM.

OP posts:
DonPablo · 12/07/2019 09:26

If people were that bothered they wouldn't post, would they?

Pinkyyy · 12/07/2019 09:27

But that's the thing, people aren't posting. Some people are scared off by it now

OP posts:
MashedSpud · 12/07/2019 09:31

It’s a public forum. Even if Mumsnet had a private section that people pay for, journalists would join and still report the story but change it ever so slightly.

There are things I’d love to post about but the fear of it appearing on a news website makes me think twice.

bruffin · 12/07/2019 09:34

Dont you understand that Mumsnet is not a private site, anyone ,whether a member or not, can read it.

WhatGetsMeDownMakesMeStronger · 12/07/2019 09:35

I'm always seeing posts on the sun that's actually how I came across mumsnet it's literally daily I see something stolen off mn on there only today I seen one about a grave in someone's garden that was off here yesterday as I read in on here

Pinkyyy · 12/07/2019 09:36

I do understand that, IABU expecting something to be done about it. I just think it's awful the way they do it and the poster may not even know.

OP posts:
Omzlas · 12/07/2019 09:42

Yes, YABU. It's a public forum OP. What exactly do you want MNHQ to do about it, in detail?

I'm sure that posters are aware that if you post something online, it can be searched, copied, amended, published etc etc. You can't demand privacy when you post on a public forum.

bruffin · 12/07/2019 09:42

I think a lot of posters are very naive about MN and all other communities.

bebeboeuf · 12/07/2019 09:43

There is a hidden section for people to post safely away from newspapers

StarJumpsandaHalf · 12/07/2019 09:44

I wish people would stop referring to ‘stealing’ posts. It’s no more stealing than if I reproduce here something from a newspaper or other news site. Want something kept private then don’t post it on line, even in a closed group.

Tabloids and others ‘lifting’ stories is lazy and galling for people who’d really rather not be referred to on other sides with far wider audiences, but those sites even do it to each other. Articles on the Fail’s site will say e.g. ‘The Mirror reports...’ The Mirror will reproduce stories from The Sun. The Huffington Post, papers in Australia etc etc they’re all looking for free content with minimum effort.

StarJumpsandaHalf · 12/07/2019 09:49

I think you’re wrong to call it safe, it’s freely available to read r be copied by anyone. Posts just shouldn’t be searachable and have a limited lifespan on the board.

Redcrayons · 12/07/2019 09:50

Have I missed the news about subscription fee?

It's a bit shit journos lift stuff from here, it's not like there isn't enough real news going on. But that's the nature of the internt, it's always on. Got to feed the beast.

Shockers · 12/07/2019 09:52

There’s one taken from a thread about ‘ghosting’ on the Independent online at the moment. It’s not even particularly well written.

Redcrayons · 12/07/2019 09:52

It's not safe at all, same rules apply.

SerendipityJane · 12/07/2019 09:54

Pretty easy to avoid the DM dragnet, as long as you make sure your post is saying something nice and positive about immigrants, benefits recipients, single mothers, the EU, cannabis, the LibDems or Jeremy Corbyn.

And (as all Daily Mail "journalists" learn on day one) - never ever mention the Daily Mails open support for Hitler in the 1930s. (In 30 years time, it will probably be Farage).

In fact, here's a picture of the owner of the Daily Mail meeting Germanys late Chancellor ....

Oh dear Sad

Does that help ?

For me the really sick-making bit of the Mail Online is the sidebar of shame with it's questionable balance of chosen pictures. You really do find yourself asking *what sort of person would keep returning to those sorts of pictures". And if your answer (like mine) begins with "P" then I would be amazed if it's "postcard collector".

TBH, much as I love MN, I’m amazed at some of the things people post on a public forum - if they are supposedly so precious about protecting their privacy. Even before the days of newspapers nicking threads, I used to wonder wtf people were thinking.Confused

CruellaFeinberg · 12/07/2019 10:20

But that's the thing, people aren't posting. Some people are scared off by it now

and? its not exactly slowing down - and this thread comes up again and again and again

anyone who thinks that posting anything on the internet is private, especially on a public forum will stay private needs their bumps reading

Pinkyyy · 12/07/2019 10:27

I haven't seen this thread done before, so my apologies there. All I have seen is more and more people moaning about the DM. It's quite annoying to open loads of threads and keep reading "DM are scum" and the like, so I just wondered if it was something that MN have considered.

Perhaps I've just been drawn in to all the DM bashing lately.
