*** Help Peter get a heart campaign*** who has contacts in the media??

Firstly, please could someone get permission from Misdee to contact the media, then perhaps post ideas on this thread before rushing out and emailing everyone on the web - once we have her permission we can all do what we can to help Peter.

Secondly, come on MNHQ, you have some 'serious' media contacts surely??

bump!

Aitch · 26/07/2007 20:27

i've got some, but not in news. can i ask, though, in all sincerity, what is likely to be achieved by a media campaign other than getting people to go on the organ donation list? i really don't understand.

If you haven't made your wishes to be a donor known, please do!

littlemissbossy · 26/07/2007 20:33

I really don't want this thread to turn into a debate. Family appeals for donors on tv are nothing new and often work, whilst raising the issue of organ donors lists.

er, you are a bit bossy, aren't you? i'm not turning it into a debate, i was just asking a question because i didn't understand what you were trying to achieve other than awareness. or are families allowed to specify who they want to receive the heart if they've seen the person on tv? if he's on the urgent list wouldn't he get it anyway if it fits the profile? once again, i'm just asking a question, not starting any sort of argument. i don't know how these things work, but i and my family are all on the donor list and carry cards. i carry dd's.

littlemissbossy · 26/07/2007 20:41

yes I am bossy and no you can't specify who gets the heart
the good thing about appeals like this is that it can play on the conscience of a family who, having lost a loved one, might not have normally considered donation

gotcha.

littlemissbossy · 26/07/2007 20:49

the British Transplant Games started today in Edinburgh - lasting for four days, maybe we could get some coverage through this... what do you think??

Well without being nasty, MN seems to generate a lot of easy copy for a lot of journos. Maybe it is payback time ?

southeastastra · 26/07/2007 20:56

yes i was reading my sisters old 'red' magazine, which always seems to mention mn

Aitch · 26/07/2007 20:56

but what does that actually mean, sherlock?

Lifestyle and News aren't written by the same journalists, by and large, and you don't really have time to be dealing with anything other than the news-sensitive parts of the majors. local papers tend to be weekly, plus that's not the coverage requ'd.

GMTV, This Morning a good bet because they can turn things round quickly but a national news show would be the best.

Aitch · 26/07/2007 20:57

oh for goodness sakes, Red will be in bed for a month before it's on the shelves.

tribpot · 26/07/2007 21:00

I think we'd like to find a way to do something positive, even if we can't (obviously) directly influence a family to donate a heart to Peter.

mummypigoink · 26/07/2007 21:03

the little girl Zoe who featured on the news last month at the top of the european heart transplant list was on the news as her family contacted local bbc who really supported them which got it onto the national agenda.

and on the day she got her heart transplant, three hearts were available. I'm not sure where all the hearts came from, I'm assuming they came from the uk, as no mention was made of the private jet which was on standby. that being the case, it would be reasonable to guess that the publicity did put it in people's minds.

i know you've probably thought of this, but i hope it's some encouragement.

Aitch · 26/07/2007 21:08

well then the smartest thing to do is start a thread with a link to the address of Lorraine Kelly @ GMTV and absolutely bombard it with requests for her to cover the story, all written individually. then that becomes the story, iykwim?

because the sad unalterable fact is that there are lots of people on the transplant list, so it's not a story.

whereas lots of individual women coming together In One Night (like, everyone on MN tonight for example) to beg for some coverage on GMTV because it offers a slim hope that our friend's husband might not die becomes a Power of the Internet story. a scattergun 'who do you know in the media?' approach is less likely to get a result imo.

littlemissbossy · 26/07/2007 21:23

Lisa (misdees sis) is going to ask her about contacting the media... so everyone get there thinking caps on

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 26/07/2007 21:36

Aitch it just means that we have provided easy copy in the past. If we keep this bumped, it could catch the eye of a lurking journo.

Just thinking out loud in a difficult situation.

Aitch · 26/07/2007 21:41

aye, well calling them 'lazy' isn't exactly going to endear them to us...

VeniVidiVickiQV · 26/07/2007 21:43

Would Max Clifford help?

Hunker

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 26/07/2007 21:45

I mentioned easy copy, I did not call anyone lazy. But rest assured I am off to bed soon so will be unable to insult anyone else.

Aitch · 26/07/2007 21:53

easy copy, fgs... where do people think journalists get stories? if they were imaginative they'd be sodding novelists.

Listen i'm not wanting to piss on anyone's chips but what exactly is the story here? i understand that this is a horrific situation but what is different about this one? because if you do get through to any journalists that's what their editor will be asking. and they ask it quite forcefully, ime.

lorraine kelly's email is probably [email protected], btw. although it likely won't be her who opens them. a good few hundred emails might catch her eye. cc'd to the GMTV newsroom etc.

southeastastra · 26/07/2007 21:59

aitch they got their stories easily enough before the internet.

still i'd rather see this on the news rather than old jaded leslie philips on the j & r show.

carriemumsnet · 26/07/2007 22:04

Hi all

If Misdee is keen for something to go ahead we're happy to help in any way we can. Think we need to get her permission first though and then take it from there.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 26/07/2007 22:06

oh thats excellent carrie
